Seems that the whole league is riled up with the pre-all star game jitters, so I guess I feel like now is the right time to stop biting my tongue and air my 1 and only greivance with the league.
I have hesitated on calling out some GMs for their participation thus far, but I feel that it has become a real problem the league must decide upon now, and enforce at the end of the season if needed.
I am calling for the league and its members to enforce the commitment that was made by everyone when we started this league, for every member to be active above everything else. I thought when I signed on with this league that I would see everyone on ICQ at the very least WEEKLY. Here we are only a month or so from the trade deadline and I still havent seen 4 of the league members on ICQ EVER!!!!
There should be a few GMs on what I will call the "ALERT" list. The ALERT list is a list of GMs who have completely been lacking in activity in this league. In my opinion there are 4 aspects of participation:
1) Main Events (deadlines, drafts, entry draft)
2) Lines
3) Discussion (Messageboard)
4) Trades (ICQ, email)
Obviously its easy to see whos participated to discussions on the messageboard (although some GMs only post when they deem it necessary, there are also some who simply never post)
Trades is easy to tell too. Simply look at who they drafted in the entry draft and some have 100% or 95% of their original squad.
Lines only the commishes would know, but I have a suspicion some of the guys will be the same guys that arent participating elsewhere.
How can there not be more outrage at this?
There are some GMs that I feel are lacking in the COMMITMENT and PARTICIPATION department, I want to explain why I feel this must be addressed and decided upon now. If we act upon this as a league right now, then we wont have to deal with the negative ramifications in season's 2,3,4,5,etc..... As the deadline approaches every team in the league should be juggling, or at least keeping open lines of communication with other teams to help their respective clubs (some will be going for youth, others for ratings). THIS SHOULD BE THE TRIAL PERIOD ON WHETHER THE GM SHOULD BE WELCOMED BACK NEXT SEASON.
As everyone knows, after the trade deadline a GM's duties become limited to sending in lines, writing articles, maybe even haggling for tags and contract extensions. This will be a time when MOST GM's participation will lag, and thus it will be harder to judge who isnt being active and who is. Thats why the ALERT list should be monitored from the moment an official decision on this is made until the end of the trade deadline.
Lets hear what y'all think.

I sort of agree, but I think the activity has picked up in most regards lately.
What's the charge for not being active though, and who's to say what is active enough?
I've certainly been in support of not asking some GMs back, but I don't think you can fire a GM once they've paid for that season. That's just what you're going to get with a cash league, you've pretty much got to let a GM in for that season and what happens, happens, unfortunately.
I think you'll just end up turning a lot of other GMs off if they can't do what they want with their teams and be as active as they want. Unless there is extreme mismanagement or cheating, you've pretty much just got to let things run their course.

i think you are being too leniant.... personally i think that there are some assistant GMs in the BRHL2 that are EASILY more active than some full members. basically I am advocating that either UNNAMED GMs pick up their activity or when they go to pay their $50 next year, the league simply say "no thanks"..........
in the words of GOB Bluth COME ON!!!!!!!!!

That's pretty much what I was saying, to refuse to take back the inactive GMs for next season.
What I was advocating against is something like having the league step in for Washington, who I don't think should be asked back next year, and trading all his UFAs so that it's easier to get a GM in here next season. I know that's extreme and probably wouldn't happen, but I'm just generally against jumping into situations where a guy has paid his money, unless it's an extreme situation, like in LA LA land.

Agreed, if you pay hard to fire someone during the season, in the off-season sure you can fire them/not ask them back but not suring the season.
i wasnt gonna name names but i agree with what youre saying....
if upon the commishes urging 4-6 GMs dont start start showing up on ICQ or emailing everyone in the league trying to improve their squads or posting on the messageboard, then im gonna be kind of pissed... and i know others will to.

I would really almost rather this didn't happen. Then you'll get guys who haven't been active at all this year start posting a bit and making a few moves and then we'll end up keeping them.
Better to shut up and just boot em out at the end of the year says I

While I do feel that activity isn't as high in this league as I have seen in others, I don't think it is a huge problem. I know I probably have one of the lowest posts total's when it comes to the message board, but I always stay on top of my lines, answer trade requests and when the time comes I make sure my team is looked after for the draft, and I think there is no problem with that kind of activity.
I will always help out Bryce and Eric when ever asked, and would like to think after being around the BRHL (and now BRHL 2) for more years then I can remember (I would guess around 6) I think I have earned the right to not post on every trade I make or get involved in every pissing match the comes along on these boards.
While I don't agree with or see a point to an "Alert list" I agree that GM's that don't respond to trade talk and don't take care for their teams (i.e. lines, drafts, cap issues) should be asked not to return. I think the best part of the original BRHL is the GM's while I don't see them online all the time I know that if I send them an e-mail I will get a response even if it's a "no thanks". I trust Bryce and Eric to decide who should be asked to come back for season 2 and who doesn't, the BRHL is one of the most successful leagues I have ever seen and I don't see why the BRHL 2 can't match that, even if not everyone posts on the message board.

Agreed 100%. There's nothing wrong with a GM who isn't interested in posting a tonne of stuff, or spending a tonne of time in trade talks. But if he's not submitting lines, not responding to e-mails or ICQs... that's an issue.
I regularly checked the user details on the boards throughout this season and 20 g.m.s regularly, daily, logged onto the boards. That's a sign of participation even if only of eye balls. There have only been 4 or 5 g.m.s who have been AWOL from the boards, though a boatload have been like Ottawa g.m. and posted very little. This league has not posted much in terms of positive, encouraging discussion. I personally did everything I could to help blow life into this league and had wind taken out of my sails by something in early December i extremely disagreed about, and voiced my opinion in hopes of seeing change. This league is far from perfect, and participation on the boards may be part of the solution, but it is a league with a lot of g.m.s at least showing up to see the results and peek at the boards, a fact that could encourage all of us to participate more. I know I could do more.

Funny you should mention it. Yesterday I counted 47 new players in my NYI organization and only 6 I had drafted (I was at ALL but two of the live draft rounds, took it very seriously, but enjoy trading too much to hold onto the boys).

Yeah, but to me that's not necessarily a good thing. I'm not saying it's a bad thing either, but the number of trades that someone makes doesn't have to indicate anything about the attention level, or the committment level that they have. Some people enjoy making trade after trade after trade. They enjoy making a trade even though they know full well it might not help them (won't hurt them either, just a trade for the sake of trading). And that's fine... but it doesn't mean that the guy that watches his team develop as-is, is doing a bad thing.

A subject that could be perceived as something that could ignite an ugly debate is being handled in a polite, and thoughtful manner, with good insights and even a few different viewpoints that can be used to perhaps integrate ideas and changes. Also is starting to branch into philosophies about team building and activity that is being handled in a respectful manner.
I was beginning to think I would never see this. Interesting discussion all, and I hope to see a few more posts on this topic. It has been a very interesting and intelligent conversation.
