If a team trades for a player that has already been signed by another team, is the team responsible for honouring that contract?
For example say Bergeron is signed to a 3mil/4 yr deal already, if I were to trade for him would that contract carry over to my team next year?

Bryce told me you have the choice of keeping that contract and the team that signed the contract pays the signing bonus or you can renegotiate a new one but you have to pay the signing bonus.
If a player has signed a deal with his prior team, that contract will be honoured. Ensure you're doing your due diligence before trading for a guy. We dont want to have to negotiate with teh same player 3 or 4 times.
(Sorry for the delay, never saw the question until now).

Why does that suck? If a player has signed a contract, he's signed a contract. Otherwise it would essentially be the same as saying that any player has to renegotiate a new contract every time he's traded. Why should it be different if a player has signed a new contract, vs. if he signed it a year ago?

The one thing that I think still needs to be clairified though is who is paying the signing bonus? I don't remember if there was an announcement about the previous discusson/poll about when a signing bonus is paid, but I think regardless if the money is taken immediately upon being signed, or during the off-season, that it should definitely be the signing team that has to pay that signing bonus. Yeah, the team that trades for a player has to take the new contract, but it's the signing team that should be paying the signing bonus (it just makes logical sense... someone is getting a signing bonus to sign a contract with a certain team)
