Team management hasn't confirmed it publicly but there are rumours that he is being mentioned in trade negotiations. He has 20 points in 23 NHL games so he'll re-rate great as usual and is under a 4-year contract for 6.7 mill.
Scott Niedermayer
80 speed
81 skating
84 puck control
76 passing
75 defense
86 endurance
79 overall

The Islanders don't need ratings this season so prospects and low rated players in trade are okay BUT they had better be tearing up the NHL now and geared to re-rate excellently. The organization doesn't care about age per se, but players set to shine in years two AND three are preferable.
BTW, the Islanders drafted the greatest defensive-minded coach Darryl Sutter (70 offense, 84 defense) so that probably explains why Pronger and Brind'amour have thrived on Long Island and why Scott hasn't (It didn't help that Scott has been mostly used on the second line unit either).
I've spent the last 15 minutes trying to find a counteroffer. Thank you for offering Nylander but he is a UFA after next season and my tag is already spoken for.
Note I'm asking for guys who will thrive in years two AND three. Not just a one year rental (I don't count this season's ratings AT ALL, as my team isn't playoff-oriented until next season, and the one after that).
A player like Niedermayer is valuable as a bluechipper longterm AND as a piece of the puzzle for a contender now.
IMO Neidermayer is probably the most valuable dman in the league over the next 2-3 seasons, no idea why he has struggled in New York, but Zubov was sucking in Columbus as well.

Exactly why the Islanders have no need to trade him.
However, his value on the market (to an immediate Cup run team) is greater than his value to the team (years two and three) and so the possible exploration of opportunities to upgrade for the near future at the expense of this season (which NYI doesn't expect to contend).
Ya for sure, I think you'll end up having a tough time dealing him now though because so many contenders are bumped up close to the cap. I think the ideal time to deal him would be in the offseason when almost every team can afford him. I think your D is solid enough for next year that you won't be needing both Pronger and Nieds.

Excellent point. I hadn't thought of the off season. But by then his value to my team will be the same as to another: I will have lost the extra value of him majorly helping a team this season!
But actually many good teams are NOT near the cap!!!!!!!!
Montreal is third in the league and has 10 million under the cap!! Carolina is up there with 17 million to spare! Teams that have been up and only are a few points behind are Anaheim (11 million under the cap), Toronto (9 million under), Detroit (14 million under), Edmonton (9 million under). Then there is the early good but now slumping St. Louis (8 million under) and surging Washington (6.5 million under).
My PM box is filling up with trade interest in Scott.
It'll take me hours if not the weekend to sort through offers and counteroffers and best interest.
Final decision will come after the weekend but already there are a few offers that work or seem close to working.
I hope thats a joke:). IN order for that to take you "hours" to go through there would have to be over 50. 10 pms if you even had that many would take you like 20 mins.. OR is this a futile attemp at making other gms up their offer;)

It takes me anywhere from 10 mintes to an hour and a half to work out a multiplayer deal that works for me. I have to research how the players are doing in the real world (because only re-rates interest my team geared for next year) and crunch salary considerations and weigh value and interest, a fun and very mentally aware process (I'm a provincial chess champion for a reason - I think through a thousand combinations of strategy, and I'm an ex-journalist so you can bet I ask a ton of questions).
No joke. No futile attempt at something underhanded. Just me being my analytical self.
Well, I see that some of my multiplayer offers were well received and it seems like decent counteroffers or minor requests for revisions show a tight race. The demand is quite staggering. I have sent PMs indicating that the gap is too big with counteroffers of five clubs, and still remaining are negotiations I like with five teams as well as lesser deals talked about with another. I'll have counters for you guys by Sunday night the latest, possibly sooner, depending if I get out of the house Sunday
I have just made counteroffers to four g.m.s that I think could get it done.
I'll now take the rest of the day off (saturday night there but it's 9:30 am sunday morning here in south korea where i teach english and today I want to go out and about).
I expect to be able to choose from two or three when I return. I hope. In any event, at least ONE of my tweak counteroffers should work!
The market is busy. The seller now flips the "closed, see you tomorrow" sign over and draws the blinds. G'day.
I stopped in at home for lunch (it's just after 130 pm sunday afternoon here) and I see that TWO g.m.s are willing to accept my counteroffers and a third wants to accept but wants to see if can trade away salary elsewhere to get under the cap and I received another counteroffer that looks good. So I have basically four negotiations near the end, one g.m. will soon be called into a meeting for a clinching handshake. I'd like to take this moment on behalf of the Islanders board to thank all g.m.s for a very lively and intense negotiation process.
