The Columbus Blue Jackets continued their wheeling and dealing Tuesday night by acquiring Ales Kotalik from the Philadelphia Flyers and Karlis Skrastins from the Boston Bruins. Skrastins, one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, was reportedly a prime target for the Jackets since his days on Long Island. "I'm not going to lie," commented Jackets GM Matt Odette during a late night press conference "We've been hot after Karlis pretty much since he was drafted. When the Isles dealt Skrastins along with other goodies to the Bruins for Petr (random expletive) Nedved we were in virtual shock."
Skrastins came home today in a deal that sees two very good prospects going to Boston. "He had us over a barrel" said Odette, "he knew how valuable Skrastins is, and with what resembles an arms race going on amongst contending teams we couldn't let Karlis slip into another team's hands. Noah (Welch) and Alex (Bourret) are going to be very good players in this league, just not this year and maybe not next year. Our strategy all along has been to go for it in the next two seasons and pick up the pieces after that."
Skrastins was reached for comment late Tuesday night. He sheepishly admitted he was having trouble adjusting to playing in the shadow of Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer.
"5 points and a minus 4 on the year" Skrastins said with a demonic grin, "and still that (random latvian expletive) Niedermayer got off scott free." Skrastins admits to having a good laugh over who he got dealt for. "When I was watching the score ticker I saw that Petr Nedved had been dealt to the Isles. I think to myself, who is going to the Bruins, Baumgartner, Strudwick, then I see it and I say holy **** it's me". Skrastins admits that he wasn't much happier playing for the Providence Bruins. Skrastins admitted that it was tough not to laugh about playing for a team with Bill Guerin as its top forward.
The Jackets weren't done there as minutes before acquiring Skrastins they pulled the trigger on a deal that will send Willie Mitchell and Bryan Marchment to Philadelphia for Ales Kotalik. This only a day after dealing away J.P. Dumont. When asked about the deal Odette was quick to offer praise. "We upgrade our right wing, our defense, our goalie and our centre positions and all we end up giving up are two prospects who may or may not pan out. That's Grade A Gming right there."
After a bevy of deals the Jackets look to finally be set for at least the next 10 games or so.
With so many teams beefing it up it appears to be a sellers market. Anyone looking to grab some hot UFA talent had better move fast!

Some interesting trades, but unfortunately, reality isn't quite as rosy as the "pat yourself on the back" unbiased news article indicates.
Goaltending definitely takes a hit without question, and is not, as stated, improved. The sole advantage that Turco has is being only an RFA after his current contract. However given that Kiprusoff is signed for 3 years (with a 4th being likely with a tag) that's not much of a factor at all given turco's age and what what money he'll likely sign for. Even if future rerates are looked at, real NHL Kipper's still got decent numbers playing on a seemingly craptastic flames team with very few wins. Factor in that Columbus has only 1 other goalie, and he's a far from great backup...
Centre is certainly without a doubt improved. No question that Sakic's superior to Weight and definitely more worth the money. Both players being UFA, and Sakic likely to have a tag used, is certainly an improvement.
Right wing is more or less a wash for this year and probably overall. Dumont's better in some areas, Kotalik in others. Dumont costs more (for now), while Kotalik is having a poor year in a super-charged NHL buffalo season.
Defence is also a wash. Despite the much heralded Skarastins, he and Mitchell are virtually the same person and factoring the loss of Marchment (who isn't much of anything, but did bring a physical presence to the defence) to be replaced by "scrub", and that Skrastins is UFA after this season and there's really no improvement here either.
and "pick up the pieces" the Jackets will indeed have to do being a team of mostly seniors. With no first or 3rd round pick in next year's draft, 6 pro players going UFA after this year (not counting any tags, plus Jason Allision unlikely to be returning) and 3 more the year after, this team indeed wants it now... because the future looks ugly.
So an increase in centre (for 1 year, 2 max with a tag, which would also mean kariya can't use the tag next year), a decrease in goalie. Without any additional prospects leaving the team, or any additional UFA players coming in return for RFA players... it'd be about even...

Just my view...
Not exactly, and if Columbus' future is ugly, Florida's is even uglier. With Jason Allison (who may still return, if not this year then next) and Vaclav Prospal able to be locked up long term after this year, not to mention Kotalik, Bouchard, Gionta and Radulov all here long term the team looks excellent at forward. Not to mention some very good forward prospects in Kalus and Soderberg, both should be in the NHL next year.
Defense could be termed a weakness, but that position is nicely locked up as well. Lars Jonsson is going to be a top 4 dman, Nummelin already is a top 4 dman, and Yandle has the potential to be one of the best offensive blueliners in the league.
Goaltending? Well, Turco will be locked up long term and Howard will likely get the chance to at least split starts in Detroit next year.
And I would definitely say goaltending is upgraded. Good ratings are nice but Kipper was playing like garbage and Turco has been one of the best goalies in the BRHL thus far. I've also seen a lot of Calgary games in the NHL and I don't seem them turning around, just my opinion.

Woot Jackets deal Keith Carney and a 2nd to the Los Angeles Kings for Mattias Norstrom
Zubov-Skrastins Rafalski-Norstrom Salei-scrub
Does it even matter who plays goal

Rigghttt... see the problem with that is that the comment is nothing more than a "I know you are but what am I" comment. The Panthers currently have 1, wait, lemme count 'em again... yep, 1 pro player to go UFA after this season, and that's Weinrich, who I just picked up to use as a 7th dman this year for cheap. I don't really count Hedberg as he's only pro to occasionally play backup to Sanford if I rest Lundqvist. And after next year, the only key players to be UFA are Tkachuk and Timmonen, both of which (if they maintained current ratings) can have tags used. The future is bright and sunny for the Panthers, as well being nice outside today!

Sure but why would you even want to keep most of your players. See the problem with that comment is that it is nothing more than a "Nananaboo boo I only have 1 UFA next year" comment. What good is having guys like Pratt, Marchant, Green and Heward when they suck.
Alex Drozdetsky, Barry Brust, Steve Regier, Billy Thompson, Josh Gratton, Kelly Guard, Bobby Goepfert, Jonathon Quick, James Pemberton, Kristofer Westblom, Jeremy Swanson, Magnus Akerlund, Ryan Pottruf
Ilya Nikulin, Petr Kalus, Lars Jonsson, Alexander Radulov, Carl Soderberg, Petteri Nummelin, Keith Yandle, David Krejci, Alexander Korolyuk, Patrick McNeill, Dmitri Bykov, Vitaly Atyushov, Jeff May, Maxim Sushinsky, Sergei Zinovjev, Taylor Haskins, Kenny Jonsson, Tom Wandell, Andrei Nikolishin
Umm has anyone even heard of any of your prospects?

LOL, wow, you sure take things personally don't you. It's not a personal attack on your team, it's simply an observation about how your team is going to be hurting very quickly... I'm just being realistic. I mean hell, assuming for the moment that Allison doesn't play at all this year, you will literally have all of your centres go UFA. Massive UFA turnover in defence in the next 2 seasons.
What good is having guys like Pratt and Heward? I certainly won't hype them up as if they were superstars (aka. Skrastins), but they're both very cheap, defensively responsible (and in Heward's case, pretty decently balanced), and exactly what a team should want in a 5th, 6th, or 7th dman. Marchant's nice speed, and obviously is the defensive player for the 3rd line. I'll certainly be the first to admit that he's overpriced though. And Green? Pretty much the same reason as Hewitt and Pratt... affordable, and exactly what you should want for a 4th line player. So yeah, that's why I'm happy enough to have those lesser guys around too. The same reason Fortunately, those are the lower tiered guys on the Panther's team.

Thankfully, the Panther's don't need those prospects to pan out, unlike the Blue Jackets, who definitely do, to even have a chance after this season...

We shall talk.
Oh and did I say I have Tomas Vokoun in net.
Well, aside from the fact that you shouldn't have Bergeron (oops, did I say that?), I guess we'll just have to be thankful that your defence can't pass or control the puck, and you have no backup goalie.
Plus, I didn't exactly make my original comments to start some sort of "my team is better than yours" thing. It was simply to comment on all the trades that Columbus made recently, and responded to his own comment about "picking up the pieces later".

I paid to get Bergeron and I should have Hossa too. Passing d-men are kinda useless except for PP and I got Pothier for that. Lol and oooo no backup, he'll play 5-10 games at most so who cares. and I know you didn't I was just mentionning it.
