Of course St Louis is the highest paid forward....he was second in the NHL in points last year, and he and Selanne are the only players in the top-50 who are UFAs (and Selanne didn't fit in on my team as well since he can only play RW).
My goal in free agency was to keep St. Louis and Vokoun and add one more scoring winger (Cleary). I am most likely going to accomplish this, plus I think I got a great deal on Knuble for $2M. Tell you this, my team has made the second round the past two years but should be much better this year. Might not work out that way, but...
A few good deals went down early (you got a great deal on Aucoin compared to some later deals). Once the first crop of players signed, people scrambled to bid on whoever was left. Happens every year. I tried to be high enough to win St. Louis early, but it didn't work.
You can't build through UFA, but, ending the year with 20M in cap space doesn't help either. If I didn't sign St. Louis, I would have over $10M in cap space. What would I do with that? Trade young players for a star? I would much rather overpay St Louis and Vokoun and keep my young players.
hey man.... for your team, especially with st.louis and vokoun with loyalty bonuses, you had to make those offers....
also, you do have studs on your roster like suter, doughty, krejci, etc... so yeah i dont think youre gonna be missing playoffs if you have st.louis, etc.
