Kovalchuk stays in NHL, signs with Devils...

Like I've been saying for months... he's not going back to Russia.  Did I mention I'd consider trading him?

I thought he would sign there.  I didn't think I guaranteed LA... I did guarantee he'd stay though.

Hey, I'll take that.  $6M cap hit for Kovalchuk... now just give Parise the exact same deal and I'll be beyond thrilled.

I'm not following you?  The cap hit is only $6M.  He'd be the 5th highest paid player on the Rangers.  The Devils should have no problem re-signing Parise.

Contract was reportedly just rejected by the NHL.

This is just stupid, was glad to see it over! I'm sure they will fix it quickly, but really how is this any different then any other long term contract that has been signed recently?

I think that Kovalchuk was earning the max (or close to it) at one point and making almost the minimum at the end was a big red flag. I'm not sure how the other contracts were structured, but that's quite a wide range of money. Plus, 17 years was absolutely F'ing ridiculous.

Its certainly the most extreme case for sure, but it is the same idea as every other deal that has gone through lately I mean does anyone expect Hossa to still be playing at 41? Possible sure, likely nope.
