NHL UFA

I wanted to post a discusson topic on the free agency yesterday, but I couldn't stop laughing at Calgary long enough to get a chance.

Thoughts?

It was quite comical. Also, the Boogie man at 1.65 for 4 years is a laugh riot. He almost got a million dollars per career goals. His agent deserve a massive raise!

Love what the Penguins did on the back-end!!! Gonchar may be past his prime but even if he lights it up in Ottawa for the duration of his contract, the Penguins gain a younger version of Gonchar with better defensive skills and also add another youngish stud in Martin to play and eat minutes back there with him. They are now ready to make another run whether they move anyone or not with the group they now have.

The leafs made some nice moves as well adding Versteeg and Armstrong and if they could now move a defensemen for a quality center to play #1 minutes, they will at least be in the hunt for a play-off spot until the end of the season.

Calgary???? Well??? Guess the idea is Tangauy turns the clock back and becomes a point a game guy with Iginla again and Jokinnen goes back to being "THE GUY" on the #2 line to complement the #1 scoring line ?? They still have a strong D and goaltending so who the hell knows?

Ottawa?? Like the Gonchar signing if he stays healthy but loss of Volchencov will be bigger then they think. Gonchar is not going to help penalty killing at all so he better score more then he costs them defensively.

I think the Gonchar contract gets Murray fired. That much for that long with a NTC? Gonchar is way too old for that.

I think the Pens did a great job fixing their defense, and I can't ****ing wait for next season.

I hope Kovalchuk does sign with the Islanders. The Atlantic division is already one of the best divisions in the NHL to watch. With the moves the islanders are making, all 5 teams could make the playoffs.

I loved how Boogard got more money than Leighten did in Philly.

I guess that Sather didn't have the cap space to overpay for a top talent, so he decided to overpay for a goon this year.

At least he keeps things interesting.

If I were an average player, I'd tell my agent to work every contract from here on out so that I'd be an UFA during a weak market for my position and skill set. I'd even sign a low, 1-year contract just to get paid 4 times what I'm worth.

Some of these are BRHL2 type contract offers. :)

Darryl Sutter is to free agent signings as Mike Milbury is to trading.

When I saw the Michalek signing, I thought that could be one of the best signings of UFA.... but then paying Martin $5 million a year seemed too much in comparison....

Have liked what the Canucks have done so far, definitely means we need to trade at least one of Salo, Bieksa or, dare I say it, Ehrhoff. Hamhuis was a solid signing, worst kept secret as well.... Ballard trade was overpayment but we got rid of Bernier which was a plus (and looking at what Ballard does consistently - hit and block shots = I think he'll make the blueline stronger....

Manny Malhotra is overpaid at $2.5 million, and not sure why we needed a NTC, but I don't mind overpaying for Malhotra as long as it means Wellwood won't be back next year... not sure where Hodgson or Schroeder would fit in if they made the team, I think with Burrows surgery means he could miss the start of next season could open up a 2nd line centre spot if they move Kesler to the wing....

Jokinen and Tanguay signing in Calgary is a hoot, Boogaard going to NYR for 1.65 million a year is insane....

Kovy to make a decision today. Gotta say my Devils seem like major front-runners. I just hope it isn't above 8M/year. Only other options seem to be KHL and Islanders.

I agree about the Devils being the front runners, but  don't think those are the only options.  I would bet a couple of teams have spoken to his agent but stayed quiet for now...I wouldn't be shocked if a team like Colorado came out of nowhere to sign him.
