What a horrendous trade as far as value goes, in my opinion anyway. Gauthier is an awful GM, there's a reason he got ran out of other places. Only reason he gets a third chance (i think its 3) is it's Montreal and he is French. From Moore for a 2nd at the deadline (if anyone will give me a 2nd for Moore ill sign off), to this clunker. Wow.
I'm with you. I definitely would have rather trade Price... but, I think Eller is going to be a big time player. I think we will have a different view of this trade in a few years.

Lets not forget that this guys nickname in some circles before was Jaro "shalak" because of all the shalakings he took. I'm not saying this is a good or bad deal, but Halak has never commanded this level of star power and dealing him at his peak level should get you the best return. If he reverts back to previous form, he is a suitable back-up and thats about it. If he stays on top of his game, then St. Louis has quite a coup !! Guess we will have to wait and see who won this deal in a couple of years. Cheers
I can see the resoning behind the deal, but I can also understand why people in Montreal would be turning over burning cars in the street right now.
Add in the fact that he is still young, is an unsigned RFA, and the market value of goalies being low right now, I can see why he didn't get more. But that doesn't mean that they didn't trade the wrong one.
I dont think Gainey wanted to trade him anywhere in the east, cause he didn't want to have Halak sweep the Canadiens in the playoffs in a few years. Maybe the Blue's offer was the best of the Western teams.
Other than the Kings, I can't think of many teams in the west desperate for a playoff proven #1 goalie.....other than Vancouver.

I'm not arguing whether they should have traded Price (personally I think they made the right call). Nor am I arguing that Halak is firmly entrenched as a top NHL goalie. I'm just saying that right now, value wise. The Habs SHOULD have gotten more for Halak. If I were a Hab fan, I would be a little upset about the quality of the package coming back (and I like Eller)
