Today marked a huge moment in the history of the BRHL2 Philadelphia Flyers.
Today we have acquired the best player lacing up skates anywhere in the world, Alexander Ovechkin.
News of the deal are just now beginning to leak, but you are getting the true details of the trade here first. Coming to Philly along with AO are Chris Drury and Petr Prucha.
Also heading to our Philadelphia Phantoms organization in the BRHL2 minors are Patrice Brisebois, Brian Willsie, and Nathan Oystrick.
Leaving town in this blockbuster is the newly acquired Tomas Fleischmann, and two perennial Flyers mainstays, the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel.
Our beat reporter Bobby Clarke had the chance to sit down with GM Rex Leak shortly after the deal was completed:
BC: So this is obviously a clear #1 favourite for trade of the year, how did such a huge deal come into place? RL: Well first off, everyone knows San Jose was right up against the cap with some very big raises due to key players in the offseason. I had inquired in the past about Parise, Chara, and to a lesser extent, (thinking it would be impossible) AO. I was approached by John via league email (everybody needs to use it!) after seeing that I had listed both Sedins on my trade block (great tool to attract trades via the STHS program guys, use it!). He first suggested some kind of 2-1 base deal of the Sedins for AO, which peaked my interest. Due to other work commitments on his part and my own, the structure of a 2-1 sedins for AO deal was basically stalled for the last 4-5 days... we did stay in touch via ICQ throughout this time (yet again guys, a great tool to use for quick and much faster negotiations than email or PMs.. use it more!). After staying in touch, yesterday I was presented with a base offer of AO, Drury, Prucha for Sedin, Sedin, and Fleischmann. I was initially hesitant about moving an up-and-comer in Tomas, so we slept on it through the night. A deal was finally completed when I asked for some help with my AHL squad which is off to a very strong start, in which time a combo of Brisebois, Willsie (both UFA's), and young dman Oystrick were added to help balance out the deal in my mind, because I was taking on extra salary.
BC: How do you feel about the players leaving? RL: We would like to wish Daniel, Henrik, and Tomas all the best in their futures with the Sharks organization. Daniel and Henrik are top 20 point producers over the past half decade in the NHL. Tomas plays with AO in the NHL, and is definitely going to benefit from that relationship. However, we felt the chanced to acquire the most prolific goal scorer since Wayne Gretzky was something that we just had to do.
BC: What will AO and the others bring to the Philadelphia lineup? RL: Well, as you can see, we have been getting abysmal point production from our top line of Daniel, Henrik, and Marian Hossa. I was only days away from calling them out publicly for caring too much about their NHL duties and not enough about their BRHL2 duties, but John in San Jose saved me the trouble. You may also notice Drury has quite good rates and a very reasonable salary, and he will pencil in as a PKer and my top line C for both even strength and powerplay. Prucha will replace Tomas for this year on our 3rd line RW role.... I should also point out that AO has 100 DU, SK ratings, as well as something very important for our top 9 forwards: a 88 CK, and 76 ST rating which helps balance out smaller forwards such as Ray Whitney and Mike Comrie in our top 9.
BC: Last question Rex, where do you feel the organization is at now, after this deal? RL: Well, to be honest, getting the best player in the world brings our organizational confidence to a new level. We realize this is still a fairly old team, and we will continue to need to get younger and cheaper. None of our organizational goals for the season have been reached yet, and hopefully Alex, Chris, Petr and the others will help us to acheive those goals.
BC: Thank you for your time, and congratulations! RL: Thank you.

Early this evening the Sharks announced that they have acquired Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Tomas Fleischman from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Alexander Ovechkin and Chris Drury. Here are some transcript excerpts from today's from the press conference that the Sharks GM held.
"Mediocrity is unacceptable in San Jose. After 20 games played we are 6th in the West. We do not play just to make the playoffs, we play to win it all."
"Our objective is to be a championship team and we feel we are now closer to achieving that."
"This deal was motivated by the league salary cap and the fact that Alexander Ovechkin is set to be come an RFA this summer"
"The Twins and Fleischman have very cap friendly salaries and terms. This trade is a huge step in the right direction for fixing our salary structure in order to assure our short, medium and long term success"
"Henrik Sedin gives us a star number one center with great PA and FO skills and we think Parise is well established enough in the NHL to carry AO's load"
"Chris Drury was a great leader for us, but his terrible NHL performance in 2009-2010 (so far) made his very available. We are expecting him to have very poor ratings in BRHL2 next year, so we really wanted to unload his $3.8M contract. When considering NHL performance and contract, we feel Fleishcman is a clear upgrade on Drury"
"Henrik Sedin and Tomas Fleishman are having amazing NHL seasons.Despite his injury, Daniel is doing great as well. We love their contracts and we know they will be a big part of our offense next season"
"We talked to about 12 teams before pulling the trigger with Philly. We are very comfortable with what we got. We wanted to retool, yet remain competitive - we have done that"
"Alex Semin, Milan Michalek are key RFAs we plan on keeping. Bryzgalov will also be tagged and hopefully remain in SJ long term. So, we obviously needed to make the cap room"
"I will not comment on the status of Zdeno Chara and Pascale Leclaire"
"We wish Alexander the best of luck in Philadelphia, he will continue to dominate the BRHL2 in orange and black and Drury will help the Flyers get to the next level in the playoffs this year"
It's really interesting in my opinion that after having one of the top 3 most valuable players in the league, you wouldn't shop extensively. I tried to be in contact with you to start negotiations but didn't hear back really?
It's not sour grapes or anything. I doubt we would have come to an agreement. I just find it strange how you went about shopping him and not being interested in what a few more had to offer ect before getting a very below average package.

OK, here we go with the criticism. You have no reason to raise any issues.
My Press Release clearly says that this was a cap move. I wanted to retool while remaining competitive.
When I contacted you about AO, you said the only way a deal would work would be if I took Iginla ($6M) or Zetterbeg ($7.6M) back. The structure you proposed clearly didnt fit my needs.
******************* Here is your quote:
I am interested in Ovechkins services. Who on my team were you looking at? Obviously I would need to move a large contract over to you for this to work. Iginla and Zetterberg are the most likely Id consider that have the necessary contract I'd need to send your way. So who were you looking at off my roster so we can start negotiations? Thanks, Luke ********************
I spoke to 12 teams, some had very solid offers consisting of 18 and 20 year olds, but that wasnt what I was looking for.
the 17 other teams that I did not contact didnt have the assets I was looking for.
It was in the best interest of all GMs involved if I didnt start a public bidding war.
and your comment about me getting a below average return for AO...I see no reason why i would need to explain myself to you.

henrik sedin is worth twice as much as iginla or zetterberg LUC
iginla less points and is UFA next year... zetterberg is almost twice the salary and only 1 year more...
for shame!
You already ripped him off, you dont have to keep shoveling the piles of B.S. around.

Ian simple math is: sedin, sedin, fleischmann for next 3 years minimum costs him 9.418 for 3 ppg forwards..
henrik sedin at 4 years 4.25 mil and 38 points in 31 games is PROBABLY worth more than: iginla at 2 years 6.00 mil and 32 points in 31 games OR zetterberg at 5 years 7.63 mil and 32 points in 31 games
even if the point totals are dead equal at the end of the year, which contract would you rather have??? EXACTLY
AND THANKS GUYS BUT MY PRESS RELEASE SECTION ISNT THE PLACE TO VOICE YOUR FRUSTRATIONS OVER NOT BEING ABLE TO GET A DEAL DONE!! APPRECIATE IT!! (not really)
cant wait to see AO light up the Leafs tonight on CBC!

I realize for what ever reason the Sedin's have a bad name around here (I have no idea why), but Henrik Sedin is tied for 2nd in the NHL scoring race only 3 points behind Thornton and has played 2 less games and Daniel is on the same PPG pace as his brother, so I fail to see why this is such a horrible trade.
Maybe some GM's should start to realize how good the twins actually are, and to forget about their first few years. The Sedins are legit superstars in this league so I fail to see how trading Ovechkin for TWO 100pt players is a bad move if SJ wanted to move Ovechkin.

they are proven playoff warrior's i agree rob like loungo is.... plus the fact they UFA at end of their deals ovechkin like a 8-10yr asset just didnt make sense to move him unless getting a young stud like Stamkos ++ or Kane ++ kinda deal...
i think if the deal was a 3-1 deal the sedin's-fleish for AO.. (throw in a salary add in like langkow if need be but get a pick or something for adding to AAAAAAOOOO)
even if drury isnt playing well (SO FAR) this year nhl his ratings are still solid for this season your trying to compete in.. then move him in offseason if need be... as a give away as salary dump to team near the floor or something..Prucha is a cheap salary guy who can add depth to any team..
but i think considering ur plan to want to still compete for next couple years adding prucha drury two multi year players just didnt make sense from alot of people's eyes.
