Had this asked to me, thought I would throw it around at you guys first.
Should we run RFA before we do the UFA process? I had a GM ask me why we don't, and I didn't have an answer.
The benefits to running it beforehand 1. Teams know their cap figure exactly going into UFA. 2. No having to track serperately what has been offered etc. 3. Allows teams affected to match or use picks to acquire players before UFA goes.
The disadvantages 1. Loses a fallback option if teams planned on going UFA route 2. Would result in increased focus, and possibly more/higher offers (could be an advantage too I guess)
Currently here are a list of true RFA players, please let me know if I have missed any. Patrick Marleau (Col) Brad Richards (Col) Rostislav Olesz (Fla) Mike Comrie (LA)
I think it worked fine last year and dont see much in the way of big RFA bidding so most of us will just be sitting around and waiting, so I see no problem running both at the same time that is the way the NHL does it, but I will go with what ever is decided.

Having one of the few RFA's I think it should happen at the same time....it does in the "real" NHL and then I can offer contracts based on what is happening in RFA/UFA.
