After much publicized controversy following the Sabres game two effort and subsequent comments made my coach Tom Renney, the Sabres responded with did what they do best.... wining.
"I took a great risk going about our first two losses like I did...the team could have responded with anger and resentment, but I was just trying to push the right buttons and it looks like I did.", Coach Renney explains.
After getting dominated 4-1 and 6-2 in Game 1 and 2 in Buffalo, the Sabres and Renney knew something needed to change in order to salvage the series. Renney personally and publicly called out his team's leaders to step up- he also made some significant line changes. Zetterberg was no longer with Iginla and Crosby- Radulov took his place on the top line while Zetterberg rejoined Brown and Kopitar on the second line. Hatcher took Erik Johnson's place with Dennis Wideman in the second pairing and moved him with youngster Shea Weber. What made this move even more surprising is that Hatcher had played all 82 games with Weber as the third pairing D. While the actual turnaround could have been a number of the changes made after game three, one thing is for certain, they worked. After being outscored 10-3 in the first two games, the Sabres went on to score an astounding 18 goals in the next four games and holding the Rangers to 3 and outshooting them 124-73!
Goaltender Martin Brodeur seemed to respond best to Renney's challenge, letting in just 3 goals in the remaining 4 games.
The Sabres turn their sights to the team with the best record in BRHL2 playoff history and reigning Stanley Cup Champions- the Chicago Blackhawks.
Game one is scheduled for Monday night in Buffalo as the table is set for a Stanley Cup Finals to remember.
