After two games of pathetic effort, Coach Renney had seen enough. After the disappointing game 2 loss the Sabres had a 'team only' meeting where media and family was asked to say outside. While no one could actually hear what Renney was saying specifically- it was apparent that he was not happy on Tuesday night.
When questioned about what went on, Renney told everyone frankly,"We've got the most talent of any NHL locker room, and we're giving sh*t effort. Horsesh*t. If they expect teams to just role over because we're the two time president's trophy they've got another thing coming. It starts with our leaders, Marty, Iggy and Sid have been playing like sh*t, they know it, you know it, I know it. If we don't want to make the comeback harder than it will be already, we need to treat tomorrow like game 7 of the Stanley Cup. "
After making the comments, Renney walked off the stages saying, "I've got nothing else for you guys..."
Just one day after issuing the challenge to the Sabres team, they responded: understood
The Sabres manhandled the Rangers in every aspect of the game tonight and won 6-1. They outshot NY by almost double- 35-19. If you watched games 1 and 2 you would not have recognized the team that set foot on the ice tonight.
Renney was much less critical after Wednesday's game 3 victory, "I'm proud of how we played tonight. We finally played like we can, and if we can play 3 more games like that, we'll be moving on to the finals, if we play like we did in Buffalo, we'll be watching them at home. I'm asking everyone to treat this like a game 7. It's the most important game in Sabres history, we all know 3-1 is a whole different story than 2-2 heading back to Buffalo."
