I should think that "rebuilding" or "condending" would refer to the trade itself rather than the team direction.
A contender can make a good "rebuilding" trade and vice versa I think. This is especially important because there are a lot of teams that aren't considered as contenders or rebuilders, so we'd get screwed if we based it on the team direction. It's gotta be based on the trade.
Also whatever happens after the trade as far as moving the players elsewhere should have nothing to do with judging the trade. Just look at it as you see it as a stand-alone transaction. Otherwise we'd be digging and digging to see who when where after all these trades...
This is why I think my Carey Price trade should be considered for rebuilder trade - it was a "rebuilding" type trade for me and regardless of who went where after. If you look at the transaction itself, it was a good trade for me.
George, for contending deal of the year, I think the players involved have to play some part in how successful the team is...

I disagree - otherwise you gotta then go look at what George got for Timonen (2 1st rounders right?) and then you say that his Timonen for Mitchell etc. trade was a good rebuilding trade because he turned Mitchell etc. into 2 1sts... it gets too convoluded...
As I mention above, we gotta just look at the trade itself....
first off i dont know if the price one qualify's for this award does it? those picks were involved in last years draft does that qualify for this award?
2nd-
rebuilder of year trade nominee
TO Atlanta- Teemu Selanne 79 UFA 1 mill salary- Tb 1st (ended up 3rd overall pick) To Mtl- Shane Doan 82 UFA 3.2 mill salary , and mtl got 750k
If Price deal doesn't qualify, then neither does this one dude - they were both in the offseason...
As someone else says - it's gotta be any trade after last years deadline (which signify's the cutoff for the award).
Most analysts have been praising the acquisition that Carolina did for Jussi Jokinen because of the impact he has had on Carolina's playoff performance...
I think that Chicago's Timonen deal should be considered a rebuilding deal because of the return he received from Toronto. But as having an impact on Chicago's performance is neglible, he was not moved for playoff help but rather rebuilding. So while I agree that it was a great deal to acquire Timonen, I would even say it would be a worthy candidate for Contender deal of the year had he remained on Chicago's roster. If you want to judge the trade by itself, you don't look at the quality of the player involved, you look at what he did for the team.

I always thought that this was a great deal for us in terms of a contender deal:
To Florida: Marco Sturm Blake Comeau 2009 StL 1 $1 million
To Chicago: Tomas Plekanec Marek Svatos Round 2 2009 Comp
Svatos had 14 goals (5 pp goals) and 19 points in 22 games with us and was a plus 19 while Plekanec gave us another high rated scoring threat down the middle.
