Honestly, any resonable person should recognize that MOST backups play weaker teams, and thus are likely to have inflated stats. You can't argue against that. It's unfortunate for guys like Anderson who actually played long stretches as the #1, but then again, they did play more games than a "typical" backup.... so if we are going to generalize (as must be the case to make stats-based rates) I'd agree that there would be a trend that more games played = better goalie. Obviously it's far from a perfect statistical fit, but it's something that should play into a formula, along with SV%, GAA, etc.
ALSO
Keep in mind the list posted at the start of this thread was ranking guys on the average of ALL rates (except LD and EX). I suspect that the guys like Anderson who had sweet stats for SV% and shutouts and stuff will rate well in the more important ratings compared to these "starters" with mediocre stats... though I haven't done any comparisons ...
Interesting that a goalie who plays 53 of his teams 64 games prior to having surgery is not rated in the top 40. I dont care how bad Toskala's stats are he is AT LEAST a top 25 goalie in this league.
His stats may not be great but Toronto plays all out guns a blazing offence and no defence. They have no ability to clear rebounds, dont clear the front of the net, and allow a lot of shots. Of the 4 leaf goalies he had the best winning percentage, Only Gerber had a better GAA and SP but the GAA went up as a leaf (although in his save percentage did too somehow). Pogge and CuJo had beyond horrible stats with the leafs. I dont see why Toskala is punnished for playing on a team that gives him no support. He is a legitimate starter, many of those guys on that list are purely back-ups
Toskala played bad this year. He was hampered by an injury for much of the year and as a result he sucked. I watched lots of leafs games (more than I'd like to admit) and I will vouch for the fact that he was brutal this year. However, I agree that even Roy in his prime would have had a rough year in Toronto....
Gerber played half of his games for another team though and his GAA climbed while a leaf. there is no way a starter who plays 53 of 64 games is not a starter
