Four goal flurry beats Fleury

After going winless against the Detroit Red Wings in the previous 4 games, the Blues have gone on to win 2 straight. The latest being a 5-2 victory in Detroit lead by Mike Fisher and Brian Rolston who both had a goal and an assist. Manny Malhotra scored his 6th of the season to start the scoring early in the first, deflecting a Sergei Zubov pointshot past the outstretched glove of Marc-Andre Fleury. The goal was a sign of things to come as Jochen Hecht, Pavel Datsyuk and Mike Fisher scored within the next 7 minutes putting the Wings behind 4-0 before 10 minutes had been played.

Jochen Hecht scored in the open ice of 4 on 4 hockey after Matt Cooke and Andrew Brunette took coincidental minors for elbowing and boarding respectively. Pavel Datsyuk scored his 24th of the year a minute after the 4 on 4 expired and, after former Blue Sergei Gonchar received a penalty after arguing with the referees about an offside call, Mike Fisher tucked in a rebound from 3 feet outside the crease.

The second period began in the same fashion of the first, after outshooting the Wings 16-7 in the first, Brian Rolston scored his 25th of the year on the second shot of the period for the Blues. That was the end of Fleury's night and Johan Holmqvist came in for relief, stopping the remaining 8 shots of the period while Evgeni Nabokov was relatively untested after Detroit managed just 3 shots in the period.

However, the Wings under Dan Bylsma came out in the third determined to end the game on a high. After Chris Kunitz took a major penalty for high-sticking, Jochen Hecht joined him just 24 seconds later taking a major penalty for spearing giving the Wings a 4 minute, 36 second 5-on-3 powerplay. Despite a heroic effort from the Blues, Mike Modano and Daniel Alfredsson scored to cut the deficit to 3. However, three was the closest they would come and the Blues came out with a key victory. The Blues maintained their 2 point lead on Calgary while closing the gap on Minnesota and Dallas to 5 points. The loss has knocked Detroit back into a tie with Edmonton for the 8th spot in the playoffs, although Detroit do have 2 games in hand.

St Louis play the Nashville Predators next, a team they've struggled against going 1-2-1 against. Out of the 11 games left for the Blues, 6 are against non-playoff teams while their main problem lies with their last game with Chicago. Depending on the recovery of Nabokov, Mathieu Garon could get the start for the Blues against Nashville, resting Nabokov for the game against Boston after.
