Canes finish overhaul, only 3 remain...

After a busy two weeks of making moves the Canes brass feel that they are done for this deadline.  We still might make a small depth move here or there but we have done what we set out to do and then some, said the Canes GM. While looking at the roster there are only three players that remain with the team that was originally drafted by this staff, in Jason Spezza, Bryan Allen, and Mike Knuble.  With the fourth player that was drafted just sent out of town Cam Ward.  Ward was a great player for the Canes but at this point we were not going to win a cup with him and it was time to go in a different direction.  What have the Canes done in the last two weeks?  Well what started as rebuilding the 3rd and 4th line to add experience and grit along with good PK players has led to a total overhaul of the whole roster?

Here are a few tid bits by the GM:

What led to the recent massive changes?

We started out looking to rebuild the PK which has been a problem for us all season, that led to the management staff starting to look at the bigger picture.  This has been one of few teams to make the playoffs, since the start of the league, but only once did we ever get real deep and that was with some luck and a hot goalie at the time.

You have always been a gm reluctant to move key parts of your core or certain players why now?

Once we decided to make the changes we were looking to redo the blue line with different types of players that what we have had.  This led us to looking at Dan Boyle and Brent Burns.  Along with that we felt we needed to add scoring depth on the second line that led to Ryan Smyth and Ryan Malone and a true second line C in David Legwad.

You have since moved Burns why move such a young dynamic player?

We new that he was in high demand, and after trading away most of our picks and not having any high end prospects in the pipe line we brought him in with the ideal that he could lead to 3 to 5 key players or prospects to replenish our depth.

He led to some very nice talent for you was it hard to move him?

Yes, it was but we feel now we have the depth and talent to try and get deep into the playoffs along with what could be a top 5 pick in the draft.  He is a great young player but he allowed us to bring back a great deal of talent and depth. That pick in itself could lead to a franchise D man or trade bait to bring in one or two NHL ready players.

More to come in Part two tomorrow.
