6 seconds, while some fans had yet to take their seats, Derek Roy took a pass from Eric Staal and beat Dany Sabourin high on the glove side to give the Blues one of their fastest leads this season. Just over 5 minutes in, David Legwand scored to double the advantage with his 11th on the year. However, the game turned nasty midway through the first after Brent Burns clipped Martin St Louis with an errant high stick and drew blood. Despite controlling the puck in the Blues zone for most of the 4 minute powerplay, the Canadiens could not beat backup Brian Boucher. Frustration shown on the face of the Montreal players and after a stoppage in play, John-Micheal Liles punched an unsuspecting Scott Nichol taking a roughing penalty doing so. And while Montreal couldn't score on 6 minutes of powerplay time that period, the Blues only needed 28 seconds before Klesla scored his 8th of the season with less than 5 minutes to play.
In the second, Derek Roy took a run at Chris Pronger, and although he rebounded off him, he was caught allowing Jiri Hudler to score his 17th of the season. Although playing a tight game, despite being in opposite conferences, the Blues managed to score once on 6 shots in the second, with David Legwand scoring his 2nd of the game and restoring the 3 goal lead for the Blues. While holding a 4-1 lead, the shots were close, with the Blues edging the Canadiens 14-13.
In the third, it became a different story, with 34 minutes of penalties handed out, starting with Tim Gleason. Chasing his own dump-in, Tim Gleason was cross-checked from behind and slammed into Dany Sabourin while he attempted to play the puck. The referees who were trying to even up the game ignored the cross-check but saw fit to eject Tim Gleason from the game. Sabourin was unable to continue and is expected to be out for a week. And after Stu Barnes scored to make it 5-1, off the enusing face-off Micheal Peca's stick came up and clipped Jiri Hudler who suckerpunched Peca in the back of the head. Peca was ejected while the game continued 4 on 4. Montreal then resorted to its dirty play with Mezei taking an unsportsmanlike penalty before Chris Pronger used his elbow on a hit. Although the Blues did not score on the resulting 5 on 3, 4 seconds after the Pronger penalty ended and before he could get back into play. Jeff Hamilton managed to stuff home a rebound to close out the game with a win.
With Dan Ellis already out, the injury to Dany Sabourin leaves Montreal with only one pro goalie left in Jordan Sigalet. While asking for comment about Montreal's 11 losses in a row and now the goalie situation, a GM who wished to remain anonymous replied "hahahahahahahaha."
