1. Derian Hatcher off the books, saving $3.5 million. 2. Moving Scott Niedermayer. Defense strong enough without him. saving $6.75 million. 3. Losing Brodeur means ponying up for a cheap option, like Craig Anderson, Mike Smith....sure he will have to pay for the guy, but that will give him a year of good goaltending. 4. Going with a cheaper option than Lehtinen.
That is saving about $19, 000,000 without being creative.

I am sure Buffalo will be fine....
Think again... He cannot possible keep all the players he currently has on his roster.
He already has $30M committed for 2009-10. That doesn't include Lehtinen, Brodeur or Hatcher's salaries... The only salary that is included in the $30M that you mentioned is Scott Niedermayer's.
Assuming he signs Crosby for $8.7M per, Zetterberg for $6.1M per and Carter for $5M per, that would put him at $49.8M... And that is without replacing Brodeur or Lehtinen.
Kopitar (6.8), Weber (4.5), Brown (3.2) and Letang (not yet available) will likely command a total of $17.5M in cap space the following season with only Niedermeyer coming off the books ($6.75M).
This is the real beauty of the salary cap... Buffalo won't be able to sign all their young guns and will have to trade them for cheaper talent. Especially with the inevitable cap reduction in 2010-11.
So, when Buffalo comes-a-knockin' offering you Kopitar or Weber or Carter or Zetterberg for your Doughty or Stamkos or Wheeler or Krejci... you'll know why!

I don't dispute the fact that I would love to have his problem... I'm just pointing out that he won't be able to keep the talent pool he currently has.

Rob what you forget, is that 8 players on my teams are better than the best player or 2nd best player on MOST teams in this league. While they will be getting pay raises, they are still MASSIVE assets to me and other teams in the league.
How many teams in this league would love to pay Jeff Carter 5 million their BRHL roster? He's going to have a top 15 rating for forwards and a top 3 rating for SC. I will keep the majority of my team.
Also, check out my record when Martin Brodeur doesn't start. 9 games 7-0-2 with a .939 save percentage. Brodeur has been awful for me this year for his standard and really only has to face like 23 shots per game. If i put scott clemmensen (who will have a great rating) and Josh Harding in at between 75-79) I wouldnt be taking to much of a hit. I've been disappointed in the goalie ouput in the sim. That being said, I still may keep him on board if thats what I choose.
I still have Setoguchi, Kopitar, EJ, Letang, Wideman, Toews, Brown, Moss at under a million (except brown).
I may have to "get rid" of 1 or 2 elite type players but if you're telling me the ransom for a zetterberg, or iginla type wouldn't be huge, then you're kidding yourself...
and for the record, I will not be going after Blake Wheeler, David Krejci types for those players...

Just so you know Krecji is already way better than Hemsky and seriously could be argued the 2nd best two way player in the game right behind Datsyuk. ]
Wheeler is having a pretty good rookie season but laugh all you want the Bruins are in first place.

On a side note Luke has a great problem.
Lol. That great problem you talk about is the most asset-enriched team in the entire league.
That datsyuk quote is hilarious. Datsyuk isn't even the best 2 way forward on his team.
I actually just reread that and I sound kind of mean. So I apologize. I need to not be so opinionated.
I could be wrong but I feel like the whole league with the exception of a few like George and Bryce/Eric, deep down wish the worst for my team and like new rule implementation that negatively effects my team because it's quite good.

Kirk just passed out.

I love having Luke in this league. I wish him every possible success other than playing against us...as I generally do for all GMs.
His ability to acrue and immense amount of talent means we have to be at our best and on our toes every moment. I love the competition.
I have no doubts that when the chips fall from his salary situation, he will come out smelling like a rose.
(Although I do remember a few little digs against us when we were hitting some cap hell...don't worry Mr. Wile, we don't hold grudges..)
The thing about the utmost competitive teams.....they want good competition....there is no joy in beating a bunch of no-minds. Which is why the BRHL and BRHL2 last for the most part...the overall core of about 15-20 sharp GMs makes winning actually mean something.

You are wrong. Try not to fall when you get off your high horse. I could care less about your team and I'm sure I am not the only one.

Luke, I missed this one....I know almost all these guys from both BRHLs for several seasons. Almost every single one of them look at rules for longevity of the league.....never is a team's situation looked at individually from a rule standpoint.
This is the cream of the crop right here. Now, wishing everyone of your good players signs multi bazillion dollar contracts in the NHL putting you in cap hell.....well, that I would expect....
