With the fan balloting process, the Montreal Canadiens are starting four of six starters for the Eastern Conference. Leaving players such as Alexander Ovechkin and Phil Kessell on the outside.
What do you think of fan voting, and do you have any suggestions to improve it?

I believe that a month before the all-star game, there should be a shortlist of deserving players (three goalies, eight dmen, 12 forwards) without any limitations (meaning not all teams have to be represented).... then allow the public to vote for them, granted the Vote for Rory campaign was reasonably funny (disappointed that the NHL decided to throw out about 300k votes to put in another dman (who eventually pulled out and Niedermayer, despite having joined the NHL 30 games into the season, got in....
would also do away with the rule of representing all the teams, i'm amazed that guys like semin, green, kessel and hossa have been avoided although they would make the all-star game more entertaining than komisarek et all....
Get rid of it all together. Make sure the host team has 2 players in the game, every team has 1 player (so thats 16 right there). Then perhaps fill in the last few spots based on a coaches decision.
I think fan voting is a joke....the Rory escapade, and now the Hab thing. Get the GMs of each team to select their one player as their team rep. Give them criteria which to go by.
Then have the coach of each all star team fill the roster, or even do it by criteria as well. (The GM picks and the next top five PPG players at their position (Whether it be dmen or forwards) get to go to the game.)
Actually, the way it is now, I think Baseball has it right. The manager names the team, leaves 1 or 2 spots open to be voted on by the fans.
THAT works, you get rid of the potential for retarded fan voting (hello Hab fans). Yet you allow idiot fans to feel they are part of the process, so they could be voting in the last 2 members of the team or something.
which ever method there is.. no one wins.. cause as a fan... im going to the all star game and im soooooo happy that i get to see in probably his last All star game for sure. Mike Modano... Even though i thought he had no shot at making it.. behind guys like Richards, Eriksson, i guess thats it. god they suck this year... but i will get to see a last hurrah for my favourite player. fan balloting is fun. keep it.

I thought in MLB they voted the starting lineup. Then filled the roster, except for the final spot, which was then put up to voting?

Personally, I would like to eliminate text messaging votes. I think that's the main reason Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney were #3 & 4 in the middle of December, without even playing a game.
The NHL made it now so a fan can simply text something to the NHL, and it votes for all their perferred team's possible choices. I don't like it. It's a small step, but I don't really remember something like this happeneing prior to texting votes in.
Also, I don't really put too much stock into the All-Star games. So I really don't care what they do with them. If you then leave it up to a coach you'd have the same people bitching that because Player A got more points than Player B, Player B is clearly a more deserving player.
It's all a crapshoot.

You are right Eric. The fans pick the starters; players, coaches, and managers pick the remaining spots.
Fan voting: Baseball fans vote on the starting position players for the All-Star Game, with ballots distributed at Major League Baseball games before mid-season and, more recently, on the Internet. When the game is played at an American League park, the designated hitter for the AL team is also selected in this manner. This method has been recently criticized because most of the starting players can come from teams that have large fan bases, such as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.[5]
Player voting: Eight pitchers (five starters and three relievers) and one back-up player for each position are elected by the players, coaches, and managers.[1] If the top vote-getter at a position has also been selected via fan voting, the second-place finisher in this category is selected.
Manager selection: The managers of the 30 MLB teams and the Commissioner's Office will fill the roster up to 31 players. At this point, it is ensured that every team is represented by at least one player.
Final vote: After the lists of 31 players for each league is announced, fans will vote for one additional player, chosen from a list of 5 players provided by the manager and the Commissioner's Office.
Replacements: After the roster is selected, the All-Star manager and the Commissioner's Office will replace players who are injured or who decline to participate.

I hate that people are blaming habs fans, this has been an issue for a long time, but just because its the Habs this year people are FREAKING out. It's annoying.

I completely agree. I do think that the Canadiens fans even had more incentive to vote. Their 100th year celebration and the fact the ASG was being played there in MTL.

Honestly the All Star game is a joke anyway, fan balloting is just one of the small problems with this game. I am actually more interested in the skills competition then the actual game... If there was anyway for them to have a format like the baseball All Star game that would be a game I would watch...
I think baseball is the luckiest of the major sports when it comes to putting on a good All-Star Game. They can put out an ASG that resembles their regular games better than the other sports. The lack of contact with little exertion needed makes it easy for the fans to think that they're just watching another baseball game.
