Our network?

I debated whether or not to post this in the "everything goes" forum but  decided that it could potentially merit league-wide discussion.

Not to often you have a group of 30 men conversing every day (or nearly every day) without some sort of knowledge about what they do or who they are.

I'm involved with a business network at the Chamber of Commerce in Calgary and basically the value of the network is you have 30 people, most of which do entirely different things for a living- be it, painter, realtor, financial planner, ect. So basically each person leans on the other 29 people to think of someone in their own personal network who may be able to recall someone who may be in need of their specific service. Some of these types of networks cost up to 500 dollars a month.

Obviously we are resitricted, since we aren't in the same city, but more than anything I'd be interested what each one of you all do for a living.

I also think if we understand that there is actually a human being behind the posts that goes to work, or school and is just like everyone else, we might have more tolerance for one another. I'm sure if Kirk and I met up at a hockey game I'd be able to tolerate his antics much more.

It's just a thought.

I'm currently just finishing up my Ph.D. thesis in Civil Engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.  The focus of my thesis is on green buildings, and specifically straw bale construction (google it!  no big bad wolf jokes though please, I am sure I've heard them all!).  I should be done the thesis by Christmas (though kirk is trying hard to delay me with all the hocley talk..).  This past summer I completed the lab portion of my research and I have actually moved away from Kingston to Montreal in order to be with my girlfriend who moved here for work in February.  So right now I just sit at home typing away trying to get the 500 or so pages finished...  Once I am done school I'm hoping to be working with the Department of National Defence working on green buildings, but that's still up in the air.

Personally, I am 28, a huge Habs fan and have been my whole life.  I was born in Peterborough, Ontario (yeah, I should be a leafs fan I know, but I was a smart kid I guess and chose to cheer for a real team).

Anyway, thats it I guess.

I am a sales manager for a company that provides safety equipment for heavy lift cranes. I have traveled with work to almost every state(Which allows me to see minor pro games in every league), and also places like Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

My intention is to start my own firm at some point, and I have had some offers in hockey because of my past writing with Hockeysfuture and McKeen's to do some writing and web stuff, I have yet to see a business opportunity that strikes my fancy and will fit into my schedule.

With five kids, although a couple are old enough to have moved out, I am still as broke as Steve...(not really bud, just trying to make you feel better Mr. PHD)

I am originally from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area but enlisted in the Air Force after one year of college and now I work Air Traffic Control in Northwest Florida.  I recently moved off base to Destin, FL and will pick up my own dog tomorrow from the shelter.  I've missed hockey so much that I flew home and paid well over 280 for the Stanley Cup game 3 in Pittsburgh(the only home game we won that series...hmm?).  Our Pensacola Ice Pilots were removed from the ECHL this season so there's no major hockey at all.  I am also involved in a swap of bases so I will be 1 hour away from Colombus giving me a chance to see hockey much more frequently.

Favorite teams:
1. Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Dallas Stars
3. Calgary Flames

ashamedI am 46 years old, father of 4, grandfather of 6, and growing!

I drive truck for a living, ( YES this is what high school drop outs do for a living )

I was married from '83 to '91 ( well officially '08 since divorce just happened this year, but have been commonlaw now for another 16.   ( Never Learn weirdface )

I am a hockey fanatic, and a true blue and white Leaf fan. ( I SAID IT ! )

I coached at the "AA" and single "A" levels in rep hockey for 16 years.

I played for 14, and my son who just retired from "AA" playing with the Toronto Ice Dogs, also played for 9 years and helped me coach his first 8 year old all star team a couple of years back.

My eldest son ( 30 ) say my coaching style is that of an old dinosaur ! ( Referring to a Shore or a Cherry style )

I once coached the "AA" Etobicoke Canucks, to an undefeated season of 31 - 0 - 1

Current claim to fame is knowing the kids Sam Gagner , Akim Aliu, Justin Vaive and John Tavaras.

All are my youngers son age and were "AAA" Toronto Marlies for years.
We practiced in the same rink, ( 4 rinks ) Jane and #7, for those who know ,for a few years, and were always talking to them, their fathers or even getting a chance to play before or after them.

Last Laugh: Etobicoke Canucks team I coached wore the old "Oh Henry" colors, with the flyng V, and we were the last to where cooperalls professionally in any organization that i know of.     lmao.gif

Good Idea Luke it's nice to know something about people.

I work for the Candian Coast Guard in the NWT for the summer months and have for the last 5 years. I'm swearing this is my last season......I'm done in 2 weeks and never coming back.

When I get off this ****TY boat I'm moving back to good old Saskatchewan and electrical apprenticing with a company that services oil sites so I deal with *******s like Kirk all day at work :)

I had a coulda shoulda woulda hockey career and never did anything.  Got a Recreation and Leisure Management Diploma after high school. Had a blast but it was nothing more than a good time.  You make no money in that field and I enjoy partying and spending money to much to live on that wage.

I'm a big Bruins fan and hockey comes first but I'm also a Calgary Stampeder and Atlanta Braves fan and follow the NFL and NBA quite a bit too.

I'm a youngin' compared to most of you as i'm turning 23 in 2009, I'm probably what's considered to be the eternal student...

I've taken two degrees, the first in engineering which I despised (mainly due to the university, UBC sucks really) so I went into history and went overseas to do so. I'm just completing my second year and have one more year to go. Afterwards I'm torn between working in a museum or going back to uni and getting my teaching degree...

as for where I'll end up for teaching or working I have no clue... I would like to return back to canada as i can't really get my hockey fix here in england, though i may end up moving to new zealand as my sister tells me they're looking for teachers....

never learnt to skate so i had to get my hockey fix by playing street hockey with my friends, but support vancouver though my favourite player since i was 10 was forsberg...

I'm 29 and I work in real estate (a property manger) have an amazing 3month old baby boy that means the world to me and a 8yr old step daughter that seems to be on the verge of turning into a teenager any day!

I have been a die hard Canucks fan for longer then I can remember and have had season tickets since the 95-96 season when they moved into GM Place, I have played basketball soccer, baseball through out my life but more importantly I have played hockey since I was a teenager, and I'm trying my hand at roller hockey this year (prefer ice hockey so far) and have actually played on the ice at GM Place, they have the most amazing ice I have ever skated on.

Too bad; I'm looking to get into Calgary real estate investment heavily in the next 5-10 years. I'll need a manager.
