Bickering: A Discussion

First off, this is supposed to be a POSITIVE thread with CONSTRUCTIVE discussion, please don't hijack it and PLEASE NO PERSONAL ATTACKS.

So with the bickering that's been happening lately (some of which I've been in the middle of) I wanted to start a thread to talk about it and see what people though about all this...

Personally I have no problem with it.  It took me a few months to adjust to the level of bitching/whining/bad-mouthing that goes on in this league but now that I am used to it it's not bad.  I'll use my recent spat with Rex as an example...
1.  Rex said something to me I didn't apprecieate.
2.  I made his comments (and my feeling about them) public.
3.  He responded.
4.  We were both penalized.
5.  That was the end of it.

Neither he nor I have continued on with that issue, we're putting it behind us and moving on... as we should.  I stated that I'll not be talking with him anymore, but in reality that'll probably pass soon and I'm sure I'll trade with him again if it is in the best interest of my team.

I've come to realize that the competitiveness of this league (both as a result of good GM's and as a result of the $) is what has lead to this level of bitching/whining/bad-mouthing.  Unfortunately, these two things are tied together, its human nature.  So if I want to continue to enjoy the one thing that really sets this league apart from others (competitiveness) I have to maintain a thick skin and just let bygones be bygones.

It is unfortunate that we continue to lose good GM's as a result of the bitching/whining/bad-mouthing but I honestly can't think of any away around it.  As long as the league continues to be competitive (which is a great thing), there will always be the bitching/whining/bad-mouthing.

The only thing I can suggest to those considering quitting is that maybe they could think about this as I have learned to think about it, and if they really have a problem with a specific GM or two, then just try to ignore those guys and maybe avoid trading with them.

At least there is lots of activity right...

Steve

There is bickering in every league, including the BRHL1. When you have 30 people involved with something, people are obviously not always going to get along.

This league is more competitive than any other that I have seen, the problem is that when it is that competitive ethics become more of a concern. Deal making, breaking, skirting the rules, and even GM style come under the microscope.

As for GMs quitting, I was going to do the same, but realized that when it comes to winning, this is the league that really matters. Making a good move really matters, making a bad move really matters.

It is just like Lowe and Burke. If you don't like a guy, oh well, live with it and make your moves accordingly.

Exactly my example before I read your last line.

i agree with all of this said above..

Me myself i know i rub some people the wrong way but i can honestly say i have no ill feelings towards anyone and hope know one really has ill feelings towards me.. My G.M style is an agressive upfront style which has proved very good for my team imo. if it was unsuccessful i wouldnt g.m the way i do.. if people actually get into discussions about nhl, or other sports and not even talk brhl i think im a pretty easy person to get along with and talks sports with.. except if ur a PSU soccer fan right eric lol....

in past couple month i have honestly tried to not stir the pot since recieving my strike.. i hope the changed approach toward league issues is noticed biggrin

Well, unless we try to seriously define ethics, and what is ethically OK, you will always have disputes.

Can you legislate ethics? I am not sure.

I'll be taking an ethics exam when I apply to be a professional engineer.  I'll tell you guys how it goes when I do it LOL.

As per the topic of this thread, I think some of the disputes that have popped up over the past weekend fall under this heading... Bickering/Bitching/Whining/Etc.

I just feel that in a hypercompetitive league that competition brings out the emotions of people, and I was certainly guilty of this in talks about Pho...
I have apologized to Steve and we have even vowed to trade again once something for our teams match up in value.

In my talks with him previously he had expressed that okposo was 100% not available, even for an overpayment... so i was shocked and saddened to see him go to one of my feircest competitors, Kirk. I sent him an inflamatory message just like he posted on the board, which is what I had a real problem with... taking a private conversation into a public forum... i acted inappropriately by posting and making fun of him...

Either way it was unacceptable on both our parts, and the commishes have fined us for this, even taking a strike in my case.

The issue with Detroit is a non-issue and a misunderstanding because what had happened is buffalo was negotiating with several teams for a top dman and I guess I just happened to be online to consumate a deal... Ian and I have already talked about starting trade talks very soon...

Look, I am sorry if I ruffled a few feathers in my post-contest with Steve.... I definitely feel I shoulda not responded period... That would have been the best course of action by me. I have talked with Eric and vowed 100% compliance with all league policies and best behaviour.

I hope that anyone thinking of skipping out on the FUN aspects of this league will reconsider and stick around.. It is a quick rebuilding process in a lot of cases and a great place to converse with people from far away who share a passion for hockey, among other things...

Have a great year everyone, and good luck to all!
