THRASHERS DRAFT RECAP- PROSPECT WRITE UP/Article

I had sent this to the league like 4-5 days after the draft not sure why it never got loaded onto main page but np eric i wanna here some feedback so i will just post it..

THRASHERS DRAFT ANALYSIS

In article itallics are quotes from hockeys future or nhl.com article's. Thought this might entertain people more than my blabbing so I only do it a little.

With various deals throughout the past year the Atlanta Thrashers entered this years draft armed with 34 selections and hopes of a franchise changing night. The team thinks it has done this with the class of players they brought into Atlanta and at prospect camp have really impressed management.

As the draft got underway the Atlanta team had two targets (Perron (#6 on big board) /Cherpanov(#8 on big board)) that if they started to fall from the drafts top 8 that the team would try and move up and land one of the two, with Hamill-Maclean being top ten picks the team struck a deal with NJ for the 10th overall pick, moving their colorado 1st, clb 2nd, min 4th to land the 10th overall pick.. Here is a summary of the picks the team made.

10th overall- David Perron (St.L NHL)- Perron is a kid who bust onto the NHL scene this year. With 13 goals 14 assists in 67 games as a NHL rookie he had good showing. We all know about him so wont bore with quotes.

Reason For Drafting- Plus 16 on a bad Blues team as a rookie impressed me.

NHL Comparism - David Perron

After being at Bryce's during his internet black out on the one of the days in the year he really needs it, im their to save the guy LOL. and the SHARK he is saw I had Bouwman high on my draft list and went out of way to make sure he positioned me into a deal..and had been wanting to move up from 53 to one of my earlier 2nds to make swap from 32 to 33 so i did it moving 33 and 44 to bryce for 32 (BOUWMAN) and 53 along with cash.. GOOF ENDED UP PICKING LEGEIN AND FINGER OHHH MY ;) LOL.

32. Atlanta - Drayson Bouwman- The speedy center was drafted in the third round (No. 72) in 2007. He entered Carolina's training camp last season in great condition and, according to Francis, was very impressive. He was a member of the 2008 Memorial Cup All-Star Team and was a Second-Team WHL All-Star forward after putting up 42 goals, 82 points and a plus-32 rating in 66 games with Spokane. In a two-week stretch in November, Bowman won consecutive CHL Player of the Week honors when he piled up 11 goals and five assists in only five games.

He was the Memorial Cup Tournaments leading goal-scorer with six in four games, leading Spokane to the championship with a victory over Kitchener in the final. He was also the only player to register points in every game his team played.

"I think that confidence he had in training camp just carried over to Spokane and he had a great year," Francis said. "When you are part of a championship team, that's huge. To gain that experience, that kind of success and understand what a championship is all about is invaluable at that age. Im sure he's working hard and ready to push again in September."

When Carolina selected Bowman with their second pick in last year's draft, they knew they were getting a winger with the upside to be a scorer at the next level. But even the Hurricanes brass had to be surprised when Bowman burst out of the gate as one of the WHL's top scorers and kept up the pace throughout the year. He is fourth in the WHL with 42 goals and his 82 points are good for 11th in scoring. The one blemish on Bowman's resume was Team USA overlooking him for the World Juniors, but given the politics that surrounds U.S.-born players who go the CHL route rather than college, it wasn't a surprise as much as a disappointment that Bowman was overlooked.

HF: How have you improved as a player from the start of the year to now?

Drayson Bouwman: I have learned to be more patient with the puck. Before I was rushing things around the net and now I have done better at finding the other players around the net or in the slot. I have found that the better play is to dish it off to the open man and then find a way to get open myself afterwards.

Reason For Drafting- Where he dominated Memorial Cup. Love this kid and think he has legit shot to be top 6 in Carolina by end of this upcoming year. They signed him to ELC less than week after Cole trade.

NHL Comparism - Jeff Carter

37. Atlanta- Jim O'Brien- The Senators selected OBrien after two impressive seasons as a center-forward for the United States National Team Development Program, and then went to Minnesota as the youngest player in Division I hockey. He had seven goals and eight assists in 43 games as a freshman, but O'Brien was talking to his coach about switching to defense, which he had done until his years with the American program.

Instead, O'Brien signed with the Senators last summer and played for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, where he had 21 goals and 34 assists and was plus-22 in 70 games. He had only 18 points in his first 33 games, but 37 in his final 37 games.

The Senators love his grittiness and work ethic. He is a strong skater who makes sharp passes, his defensive skills are excellent and he is a very good penalty killer. O'Brien is also a weight-room junkie and coaches love his dedication to his craft.

Reason For Drafting- Sens are good NHL drafting team. he will be one of the best players in WHL this year from what ive read aswell.

NHL Comparism - David Legwand.

40. Atlanta- Nick Ross- Hes known as a smart two-way defenseman, with good playmaking ability. His offensive numbers arent quite there but his positioning and prowess on the ice surely make up for that. He's one the league feared open ice hitters. The Coyotes would love to have Ross on their starting day roster this year and that maybe happen. However looking down the road and more long-term, there is no need to rush the young blueliner. He'll probably get the maximum games allowed in the NHL before being sent back to the WHL for his final season in junior.

"He's very, very calm with the puck -- maybe too calm," Gretzky said. "he has a chance to make the club. We have some openings on defense."

Reason For Drafting- Think he has legit shot at making team with Boynton-Ballard holes.

NHL Comparism - D.Girardi

42. Atlanta- Josh Godfrey- (from HF yr of draft)-Godfrey is a prototypical offensive defenseman. Measured at 99.7 mph, Godfreys slap shot from the point has been compared to NHL great Al McInnis'. Though he is not very sound in his own zone, Godfrey has the potential to make it up with the points he produces on the offensive end. He stands at 62, is very physical.

Now on NHL.com-- Godfrey transformed his game last season under the tutelage of then-coach Craig Hartsburg at Sault Ste. Marie in the Ontario Hockey League. There, he posted 34 assists and 51 points in 60 games while finishing with a career-high plus-31 rating. Although Godfrey scored a career-high 57 points in 2006-07, it was his minus-2 rating that stuck out like a sore thumb and forced him and Hartsburg to reassess his style of play.

Reason For Drafting- Watched live at Super Series and was really impressed.

NHL Comparism- Shea Weber.

43. Atlanta- Aaron Palushaj- Palushaj boasts a good all-around game. He can snipe goals with his quick shooting, and his stickhandling and playmaking abilities are also strong. He doesn't mind physical play, willing to dig in the corners to win the puck.

Reason For Drafting- Dominated in freshman year at U of Michigan 10 goals 34 assists in 43 games, Had very similar numbers to the #19overal Max Pacorietty at Michigan.

NHL Comparism - Patrick Elias

47. Atlanta- Wayne Simmonds-Simmonds has a lot of raw skills that make him a very interesting prospect as he develops. A good skater with a solid shot, he is also not afraid of physical play and is willing to drop the gloves in defense of his teammates despite his thin frame. Also has a leader-type mentality

Simmonds made a name for himself as a physical presence to be reckoned with on the ice, also earning a roster spot with Team Canada for the WJC. With a solid 75 points in 60 games between Sault Ste. Marie and Owen Sound of the OHL, Simmonds was no slouch on the score sheet while acting as a wrecking ball in front of the net and was more than willing to drop the gloves against any foe. Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2007 Entry Draft as a relative unknown, Simmonds did not appear on any radar or scouting service information at the time of the draft. He has continued to bulk up his frame over the season but continued strides in this department need to be made to be able to apply his physical game to bigger and stronger competition in the professional game. As long he remains equally a threat to score as well as to lay a physical hit, Simmonds will be a valuable prospect for the Kings as a gritty winger capable of decent offensive production while physically wearing down the competition late in games.

Reason For Drafting- Hartsburg coached him at WJC loved him and went to OHL and traded for him right away. Shows me this kid has what it takes to impress NHL mind.

NHL Comparism- Bill Guerin

49. Atlanta- Tyson Sexsmith- 2006-07: Including the WHL playoffs, Sexsmith collected 14 shutouts in 73 games after being handed the starting job by head coach Don Hay in November. Had a sparkling 1.79 GAA. After veteran goaltender Dustin Slade left the Giants, Sexsmith weathered the media storms and doubts concerning the ability of a 17-year-old being able to backstop the Memorial Cup host team. The critics have been answered and silenced as Sexsmith gained confidence throughout the season and led the team to a national championship. The 6', 200-pound native of Priddis, Alberta will be tested next season in Vancouver as the Giants look to reload following the loss of some key veterans.

San Jose's pick in the 2007 draft appears ready to turn pro after a second straight outstanding season with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League. In 62 games, he posted a 1.89 GAA and nine shutouts while going 43-11-6 and making the WHL All-Star team.

Reason For Drafting- His #'s speak for themself. + Will take over a sick team in 2-3 more years in my opinion.

NHL Comparism- Ryan Miller

53. Atlanta- Simon Hjalmarsson- A very well-rounded player, Hjalmarsson stands out with his speed, technical skills and intensity. He's a good goal scorer with a quick release and above average playmaking ability who has so far produced at all levels. Although he has plenty of flash offensively, Hjalmarsson is also a hard worker with excellent attitude and penalty killing ability. He needs to become stronger.

Reason For Drafting- Good value here is longer term prospect with all-around ability

NHL Comparism - Jochen Hecht

64. Atlanta- Nick Palmeri- Standing at 62, 215 lbs, Palmieri is an imposing figure on the ice. It took him a little while to learn to start using his big frame to his advantage and start driving to the net with more authority, but now that he knows the edge that that gives him, it gives opposing defenders fits. He possesses good, quick hands and can do some damage once he takes up residence in front of the opposition net. However, he is also effective in between the dots and in the slot due in part to an above average shot. His soft hands also allow him to be a creative passer and playmaker. As a power forward, Palmieri naturally isnt the fleetest of foot and lacks some top-end quickness, but he does have a strong skating stride and is tough to knock off the puck. Improved conditioning will help improve that aspect of his game. He is sound defensively and is not afraid to play physically. As he grows into his frame and gets stronger, he should become even more effective in that area. The Devils are quite high on Palmieri, despite being in the organization for only one full season. He was inked to a contract early on in the year after his strong showing at training camp with the Devils. He is still a little raw at this stage in his development, but he appears to have all the tools to develop into a 25 to 30-goal power forward in the future. He will likely return to the OHL this fall with Erie, however, a trade to a stronger team would likely be welcomed by Palmieri and the Devils.

Reason For Drafting- Think he will be a Sutter favorite right away and in NHL within 2 years.

NHL Comparism- Jamie Langenbrunner

73. Atlanta- Maxime Macenauer- The Ducks took Macenauer more on promise than performance. He missed most of his draft year with injuries, but they grabbed him in the third round (No. 63 overall) in 2007, even though he had just one goal and four points."
"Appearing in only 14 games during his draft year,
Maxime Macenauer has used the 2007-08 season to show why the Ducks chose to select him in the third round. An all-weather forward for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the Laval, Quebec native has been one of the main reasons why the Huskies were a dominant force in the QMJHL all season long.

With 23 goals and 60 points in 67 games, Macenauer finished the year fifth on the team in scoring. Missing almost an entire season of development is a formidable challenge for any player (and surprisingly it is not a rare occurrence among Anaheim prospects), however, Macenauer has rebounded successfully and is well on his way.

Continuing to be a valuable contributor for Rouyn-Noranda as they expect to make a long playoff run, Macenauer has four goals and six points in six playoff games. Displaying a knack for clutch production, two of his goals have been game winners, including one in overtime."
"He was a kid who in his draft year only played 14 games, so his numbers weren't real good," Murray said. "He's a big, strong skill player. He missed a whole year, so he's one behind. He's going to be a surprise to everyone."

Reason For Drafting- Had noticed what this scout was saying prior to reading the blurb on him after posting. 67 games 23 goals 37 assists for 60 points in the Q,And with sick 16 points in 17 playoff games he continued to develop nicely.

NHL Comparism - Victor Kozlov

74. Atlanta- Ted Ruth- He's a big, physical kid," said Tyler Wright, the Jackets' development coach. "He came in here for just the first couple of days of development camp and he was first in the fitness testing. This is a kid that understands the commitment that you have to have to get to the next step. These are the kids that find a way to win and find a way to play in the NHL. I am really excited about him."

Reason For Drafting- Had eye on him since Fedorov trade at NHL deadline.

NHL Comparism- Scott Hannan

77. Atlanta- Marc Katic- "He's built for the new NHL," Jankowski said. "He's a tremendous skater; he moves the puck very well. He had a tough year with both shoulders being injured, it slowed down his development last year, but he's built for the new game. His skating, his puck skills, his ability to move the puck and run the power play he's bringing an offensive threat."

Reason For Drafting- Saw he got invited to WJC tryout for team Canada, after injury riddled year last year in Sarnia he will have a big role this year.1st round talent I hope puts it together.

NHL Comparism- Tom Gilbert

78. Atlanta- Joakim Andersson- "He'll stay in Sweden and should be in the Swedish Elite League full-time this year, which is a big step for him," Nill said. "That's like going to Grand Rapids. We'll monitor progress from there and decide in a year if he's ready or if he still needs another year before coming over. He's a very hard working, real solid, third-line type of guy. He's going to be a shutdown type of guy."

Reason For Drafting- Detriot pick and got good praise from their scouts.

NHL Comparism - Sammy Pahlsson

92. Atlanta- Jason Gregoire- In first season with Lincoln of the USHL, led team with a +28 ratingPlaced fifth on team with 15 goals, also adding 20 assistsTied for second on the team with two shorthanded goalsRanked second in shooting percentage on Lincoln among players with at least ten goals with scoring at a clip of 14.4%. In second season with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL was named the 2008 USHL Player of the Year and Forward of the YearLed the team and league in goals (37) and led the team in points (69) for the regular seasonPosted a plus 18, second on his teamIn the playoffs, led league in points (12)Had four game winning goals in the regular season and two in the playoffs.

Reason For Drafting- Won USHL MVP. Isles need help offensively in next couple years with almsot no one under contract upfront other than elc deals.

NHL Comparism - Chuck Kobasew.

101. Atlanta- Chris Van de Velde- The 6-2, 215-pound power forward had a breakout season in his sophomore campaign with the University of North Dakota, going 15-17-32 in 43 games. It was a huge jump for Edmonton's fourth-round pick (No. 97) in 2005, as he notched just three goals and six assists as a freshman.

Reason For Drafting- OILER HONK

NHL Comparism - Jarret Stoll

113. Atlanta- Ryan Thang-2006-07: Ryan Thang was a key component in Notre Dame's successful season. The Edina, MN native led the team in goal scoring (20), power play goals (10) and game-winning goals (6). His 41 points led all Fighting Irish rookies. He was one of three Notre Dame players selected to the CCHA All-Rookie Team. He was also a finalist for the CCHA Rookie of the Year and was named Notre Dame's Rookie of the Year.

Thang is a tough, two-way power forward. As good as he has been offensively this season, it almost never came at the expense of his defensive responsibilities. He is meticulous in his attention to the details of his game, especially in his positional play. Thang is an excellent skater who is strong on his skates. His great stick work combined with his quick hands makes him a very proficient puck handler. Thang has shown a willingness to drive hard to the net and pay a price to make the play. He also has a knack for scoring timely goals. With added size and strength, Thang will be a more formidable player to contend with.Reason For Drafting- Had good offensive numbers in NCAA and alot of good defensive praise in all my scouting up to draft on him.

NHL Comparism - Shawn Horcoff

118. Atlanta- Justin Falk- Tallied 15 points (3-12=15) and 88 PIM in 62 games with Spokane (WHL) last season...Led the Chiefs with a +11 rating and ranked fourth in PIM...Totaled ten points all assists and 35 PIM in 53 outings with Spokane and Calgary as a WHL rookie in 2005-06...No. 74 among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting Service final rankings. The stay-at-home defenseman Falk is a huge 6'5 and 217 lbs. He's led the 2008 WHL champion Spokane Chiefs in plus/minus the past two seasons at +11 in 2006-07 and +27 in 2007-08. With his size, he can dominate at the WHL level, but will need to fine-tune his game and work on things like moving his feet better as he has been a bit prone to taking "lazy" penalties, which will become more apparent at higher levels of competition. Playing in the Memorial Cup tournament is next up for Falk.

Reason For Drafting- Was big BIG 6'4 220lbs reason Spokane won the Memorial Cup. He got named to Memorial Cup All-Star team which I liked.

NHL Comparism- Cory Sarich

127. Atlanta- Evgeny Dadonov- On the small side at 510 and 178 pounds with burgeoning offensive skill. Doesnt shy away from the rough stuff and is willing to go into traffic in pursuit of the puck or scoring chance. His defensive game is underdeveloped. The young winger didnt look at all out of place in what would become his breakthrough campaign in the RSLs final season. Dadonov managed to score seven goals and assist on 13 for 20 points in a league know for its stinginess and dominated largely by veteran players.

Reason For Drafting- Wanted to take a shot on a homerun like pick on a couple picks for the draft, and liked how he played in Pro league at a young age.

NHL Comparism - Sergei Samsonov

129. Atlanta- Austin Smith- "I would have been happy to go anywhere, but to go to a home place, where you grew up and played your youth hockey, is pretty exciting," he said. "I watched them win the Stanley Cup when I was growing up, and they were always my favorite team. Its something to work for in the future."
"I remember Game 6 and how it played out in overtime -- I remember it all. Jamie Langenbrunner was my favorite player. He played gritty, tough, and he could score. As a player, I model myself after him and (Brenden) Morrow."
After his big year in prep school when he got drafted, he signed with Penticton in the British Columbia Hockey League, a Tier II Junior A league, a move that allowed him to keep his college eligibility. Smith put up 32 goals and 67 points in 62 regular-season games, then had 11 goals and 22 points while being named MVP of the playoffs and helping the Vees win their first league championship in 22 years. "Playing in different places makes you realize there are different ways to do things -- you get exposed to different things and different coaches," he said. "I had already gone out there and met some of the guys, so I felt right at home. From there, we had an unbelievable year and a great playoff run."

Reason for Drafting- Hometown kid which is RARE for NHL Dallas, Had very nice year in BCJHL after playing high school hockey on east coast. With travelling and living away from home it shows kid is committed to becoming best he can. Think with his BCJHL year last year if he was in Stamkos entry draft would have rivaled Colburne for non-major junior top pick...Think he was a nice steal.

NHL Comparism- I think wont have banging grit like a Morrow like he says. But I think could be Dallas's hometown hero version of a Ryan Smyth type grinder/ garbage goal guy.

134. Atlanta- Andreas Thuresson- Works very hard at both ends of the ice and can play in all situationsDisplays a consistent work ethic and pays the price in front of the net Is strong on the forecheck and does not hold back when he makes contact Is a hard player to play against... Is strong in the corners and strong on the puck Plays with passion and energy.

Reason for Drafting- Saw he made commitment to NA hockey early in his career and with his style should have a NHL job someday.

NHL Comparism- Trent Hunter

135. Atlanta- Dwight King- King led Lethbridge into the WHL championship series. The dramatic rise in the standings by Lethbridge and their subsequent drive through the playoffs was due in no small part to Kings tremendous development since last season. Already a large frame at 63 and 213lbs, King nearly tripled his goals scored (34) while significantly improving on his plus/minus, as did most who played for the Hurricanes this season. King was dominant on the power play and showed grittiness sufficient to hold up to large defenders and dig out pucks around the net.

Reason for Drafting- Read ALOT of good things about this kid entering the draft thought he was nice find at this late.

NHL Comparism- Eric Cole (STEAL)

144. Atlanta- Niclas Lucenius- Was ranked 13th among European Skaters prior to the 2007 NHL Entry Draft Represented Team Finland at the World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007. Played for Team Finland at the 2007 World Junior Championships and tallied two points (one goal, one assist) in four tournament games

Reason for Drafting- Saw him play in game at 07 WJC and was impressed.

NHL Comparism- PJ Axelsson

155. Atlanta- Alex Kangas- Kangas, a fifth-round pick (No. 135) in 2006, was named to the United States Hockey League All-Rookie Team in 2006 with Sioux Falls after going 20-6 with a 2.15 GAA and .930 save percentage. In his first season at the University of Minnesota in 2007-08, he replaced incumbent starter Jeff Frazee and finished 12-10-9 with a 1.98 GAA and .930 save percentage. The 21-year-old native of Rochester, Minn., will enter his sophomore season with the Gophers this September.

Reason for Drafting- Beat out Jeff Frazee for starting job in NCAA, with impressive numbers.

NHL Comparism- Jonas Hillier

160. Atlanta- Jean-Simon Allard- Allard is a big forward who can skate, and has worked to improve his overall consistency and effort as a defensive player. He has very good hands and vision. Despite slipping in the draft, he still has a good deal of potential, and has emerged as a player who can reliably set up his teammates.

Reason Drafted- 12 points in 6 playoff games after 60p pts in 67 regular season games.

NHL Comparism- Matt Cullen

161. Atlanta- Andrew Kozek- Kozek has some talent, but his game is very uneven. He has good velocity on his shot, but doesnt protect the puck well and isnt fast. Of the three second rounders the Thrashers had in 2005 (including Pavelec and Denny), Kozek is the furthest behind in development. He'll need to put his game together in a hurry to remain a viable prospect.

Reason for Drafting- Saw him when scouting Van De Velde on the North Dakota team, noticed he was a high pick in 05 and figured hes worth the gamble.

NHL Comparism- Anson Carter

167. Atlanta- Arturs Kulda- The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Latvian who was signed to an entry-level contract on May 22, has been a pleasant surprise. In 2007-08, Kulda scored 34 points with a plus-9 rating in 55 games with the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League and was even signed by the AHL's Chicago Wolves to an amateur tryout, finishing with one assist and a plus-3 rating in five games.

The Thrashers' seventh-round pick (No. 200) in 2006 is destined for AHL duty this fall and, according to Marr, has done an exceptional job in seizing the opportunity to showcase his ability despite being a late-round selection.
"When he came to us here, we said, let's use him," said Chicago assistant coach Todd Nelson, who worked with Kulda in rookie camp. "We liked the way he passed the puck in practice. We kept waiting for his game to falter a bit. It's a grind. But he was excellent; a lot more calm than I thought he'd be for a 19-year-old kid. Any kind of system we talked about, he picked it up right away."

Reason For Drafting- Read about him on NHL.Com and think maybe longterm with his familiarity with Bogosian from junior maybe he could be paired with him down road..

NHL Comparism - Danny Markov

191. Atlanta- Brock Trotter- Trotter is a potentially high-reward player signed as a free agent halfway through the 2007-08 season when he left the Univ. of Denver. He had long been on the Canadiens radar. Assigned to the Hamilton Bulldogs. "His strength lies from the offensive blueline in," Trevor Timmins said. As to why he was passed over in the draft, Timmins feels its a number of issues. "Maybe the first year was exposure, he missed most of the first year with a severed Achilles tendon," he explained. "Last year may have been size hes 59."

Reason for drafting- Bryce told me he was one of his 7th round guys hahah good reasoning hey LOL...

NHL Comparism- David Vyborny

203. Atlanta- Cody Almond- Posted 43 points (15-28=43), including four PPGs, and 72 PIM over a 68-game span in his first full season with Kelowna (WHL)...Led the Rockets in points and assists, and ranked second on the team in goals, while finishing No. 14 on the WHL rookie scoring chart...Notched three points (2-1=3) in 23 contests for Kelowna in 2005-06...Racked up 43 points (28-15=43) and 108 PIM in 30 games for Calgary (SAMHL) during 2004-05.

Reason For Drafting- Took his game to another level this year with 69 games 22 goals 34 assists for 56 points. His 114PIM show he is good tough kid aswell at 6'1 205lbs.

NHL Comparism- Ethan Moreau

Who knows int five five years a strong lineup could be proabably be made from this class.

Perron-Obrien-Bouwman
Hjarlmasson-Palushaj-Simmonds
King-Macenauer-Palmeiri

Dadonov-Andersson-Gregoire

Thurresson-Vande Velde- Smith
Allred- Thang- Lucenius

Kozek- Almond- Trotter

Godfrey-Ross

Katic-Ruth

Kulda- Falk

Sexsmith

Kangas

Obviously I know some of these guys will never pan out but hope everyone enjoys the read.

My feedback: This should be posted in the "Team Press Releases" board, and not the "Main Board" :)
