One of the best rated coaches in the league is coming to St Louis to relieve rookie coach Alain Vigneault. Barry Trotz, formerly the Thrashers coach who was removed from his post after leading his team to the Stanley Cup finals, has now moved to St Louis.
In a deal that saw St Louis move recently acquired defenseman Pavel Kubina to the Coyotes, Trotz hopped onto the trade and joined a potential cup contender. "Vigneault was given an opportunity to lead the team into the playoffs, but failed despite being given, what we felt, was a playoff team. Now we get some added benefits in Trotz, who has been to the finals as well as a more offensively minded coach."
When caught up at the St Louis airport, Trotz had this to say "I've had very encouraging talks with the management, after leading a team to the cup finals last year I was quite shocked to be fired by the Thrashers. At least I'm with a team that respects what I bring to the table and hope to push this team into a nice playoff berth. I realize that we are in one of the toughest divisions in the league with Chicago and Detroit, but I would to say that we could contend for the division title."
Currently, the team has been making moves to solidify the roster, as of right now GM Gareth Evans would be satisfied if he could acquire a solid LW to play on his second line and is always willing to listen to offers.
In a news release from Atlanta Thrashers the teams G.M had this to say about recent remarks from former coach Trotz.
"With us always handling things classy before he went on tirade taking shots at me as I am the owner/CEO/President/part time coach of this organization, all we have to say to about coach Trotz is that we were really suprised actually that our team got as far as we did.. In meetings with our two franchise pillars Ales Hemsky and Dany Heatley both guys who've been here since start and are the leaders in the locker room here. In the meetings after last year disaster of a season that they wanted major changes lazy head coach and other vetern players aswell. They both expressed appreciation later in offseason for management not standing for it and bringing in the talent to make a serious run without a good coach at all. When I brought in Zdeno Chara things turned in Atlanta our team went from a potential rebounder to a team even with bad coaching would be near top of standings..All Season the team performed well as i played a serious part of the coaching staff in film/video study of opponents as this is something coach trotz didnt do for us in Atlanta as he felt he wasnt getting paid enough.. during last years all-star break both expressed how they didnt think the team could win it all last year because of their coach's repeated failures like the year before where the team had crumbled to 9th worst by end of year and never won much of anything in the playoffs in the NHL. With the team in 2nd in the standings mainly according to the two star players because of the chemistry built around winning "in spite" of his coaching, the players told me when i would go on vacation last year that the team wouldnt even run drills in practice just a bag skate because Coach knew their hate for him.. With the team still dominating and not being able to take the job fulltime myself I decided to just leave it as is and hope it wouldnt explode until the offseason. What happened in the cup was a disaster, after dominating in game one but allowing 2 weak goals coach Trotz bag skated the entire team. The following game Chara-Jokinen got hurt missing multiple games, in game 3 heatley went down missing multiple games. So we knew we had to get a new coach, In landing Mike Bab**** we get a NHL Champion coach who will keep things entertaining for this great group of young talent weve assemble for this year.."
he then went on to say, "I really wish that coach would have been silent as after landing in phoenix they were obviously put off by him enough to trade him without even giving him a chance to coach a practice.. If could would have stayed down i wouldnt have had public tirade on the man who in the words of our leaders cost us a TRUE shot at the cup..
:) :) all in fun coach trotz please dont take offense to this and get lawyer after me..
After disparaging remarks from Atlanta's John Ferguson Jr look-a-like Kirk Shuck, Trotz released this statement.
"After taking a subtle potshot at my former management, I expected at least some shots in return in my two years of service to the team. What I saw in the paper was a poorly formed, grammatically incorrect tirade about my poor coaching. It is true that Mr. Shuck did take part in practices in Atlanta, he would strip down and stand in front of the net and demand the players take shots on him. He threatened anyone who threw up would be traded, that was the real reason why Atlanta traded so much, guys couldn't keep their lunch down."
At this point our reporter was able to get an interview with Henrik Tallinder, one of the most frequently traded players between Atlanta. Tallinder had this to say, "Barry was right, I wanted to be part of a contending team, but every practice Mr. Shuck came to, I just couldn't keep it down. But he had such a bad memory that he would keep on trading for me again."
Barry Trotz went on to state, "when I was given my extension at the Thrashers, I was assured I was part of their long-term deals. I still have the press conference details of what was said at that conference, here they are." http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=85830&p=3&topicID=13616987
Mr. Trotz kindly provided us with a transcript of what was said by Mr. Shuck. " Today the team is happy to announce the re-signing of our head coach Mr. Barry Trotz to a 3 year 850 per year deal. We are happy to have Barry here in Atlanta and look forward to him leading our group of young men for at least another three seasons."
With this evidence into view, it's a wonder any contract given to a player or coach will be honoured by the Thrasher management. On the subject of Heatley and Hemsky, Trotz had this to say.
"Dany conducts himself with a high level of class, I highly doubt that he would have agreed to what was obviously the GM speaking through him unless threatened by the GM to a double practice with him. I'm extremely surprised that they called last season a disaster, I'm sure many fans would think a 2nd place finish in the conference and a trip to the finals a good season. When the team conceded two weak goals, Mr. Shuck was furious, he wanted to trade the entire team at that point and became even more so when I told him the trade deadline had already passed. He demanded that I skate the team hard the next day, so it shouldn't have been any surprise to him that there were injuries. Luckily I keep my office bugged so I have a voice recording of the conversation which I have in my possession and can play for you. When Mr. Shuck fired a couple of my assistants early in the year, I expected attacks in the media so I decided to keep my back covered as I thought he would go after me as soon as I left the team."
"Hemsky is just a little rat, every time Mr. Shuck would come to practice he would be at his beck and call bringing him coffee, snacks and Britney Spears CDs. And when it came to taking shots on Shuck? Hemsky kept complaining his cup was too tight, we never said anything publicly but I always thought he was aroused at the sight."
We at the St Louis Times were shocked to hear at the allegations that the Atlanta GM had thrown at St Louis' new coach Barry Trotz, but weren't shocked to hear about the allegations of Hemsky's as many rumours have surfaced ever since the Keanu Reeves incident. Trotz ended his statement like so,
"I'm glad to be a part of a team that recognizes what I can do for them, I've already had encouraging talks with the team's president and the general manager to forward this team to the playoffs. I know that my contract will be honoured by the team so that gives me the security that Atlanta could never give me."
We were able to get a quote from GM Gareth Evans, "once again, I'm proud to have Trotz onboard, he'll be a great addition to the team. Now as I'm sure this will die down as I'm sure Kirk would admit that this has all been a joke."
