George took a risk acquiring Timonen, as he had 7 pro defensemen on his team one would have to move. As a result he looked to move one, the easiest being Timonen and he got a better deal elsewhere. It happens often in sim leagues, so it's part of being a good general manager to get more than what you part with.
I don't see certain gms because I'm in England so unless I stay up (which I only do a few days a month to try and talk trade on ICQ). If Cal felt like he got a good deal, which he must have done to make that deal, then good for him!
My personal opinion is that George made a shrewd move and got a reward for it, I think Cal could have gotten a better deal elsewhere but if the deal he got fits his team (getting Kotalik in a deal in exchange for Gill) then it's good for both teams.
My move for Timonen was a good and bad deal for me. First of all, my main purpose for working with Cal on a deal was to avoid him going elsewhere. After his acquisition, we were fortunate enough to work out a deal for two great forwards in Plekanec and Svatos.
That put is in a position that we started to look beyond this year. I then though of where we could cut more salary, and add some assets for an extra defenseman.
Our intention wasn't to flip Timonen, but I started to shop him because everyone else...Markov,Green, Streit, Volchenkov, Visnovsky are part of our core for next year.
When I started shopping him, I knew you would offer junk Kirk, which you did. But a couple other GMs stepped up with some good value. Two late firsts for an 80 OV $2.4 million dollar rental and a 2nd may be an overpayment, but judging by the sour grapes....maybe someone else should have bucked up.
As for Cal, he does always defend you Kirk...saying you are good for any FHL. Good competition is what makes a good league. I would refrain from throwing him under the bus if I were you.
" First of all, my main purpose for working with Cal on a deal was to avoid him going elsewhere."
this was kinda the point of my post. why not shop timmonen to teams that would have a premium/need, on him and not take a offer from someone with a clear NON need and only get back admitted "high risk" prospects... i wasnt throwing cal under the bus in ur words george. I was simply trying to point out that he can be a hard ass with others like he is with me in negociations like he has been with cambell which have ended because of insane price.. same as what happened with timmonen until timmonen was moved for a "high risk" package, just hoping the same thing doesnt happen to Cambell...
The fact that I consider me and cal friends really has nothing to do with what my opinion is on what he got in return on his guy, i consider Rob Ottawa's G.M a friend and i dont hold back my opinions on trades he's made in our league.. ..My post isnt sour grapes or bitterness just a small jab to again let cal know to be a hard ass with everyone
You were not offering anything of significance for Timonen. You offered Jochen Hecht who is having a horrible year and you wanted me to add Valabik on top of Timonen to even things out. Personally, I think an offer of Torrey Mitchell alone is equal to that as Mitchell had a pretty darn good rookie season, is younger, cheaper, and I wouldn't have to add one of the my few young players with potential. The only thing that makes Mitchell a risk is his injury, but I think he should be able to come back from that.
As for Brian Campbell. As I have said to you, I am not shopping him and I intend to use a Lemieux tag on him at the end of his contract so he is not a UFA to me at the end of next year. My asking price on him is what his value is to me (a premier Dman with 3 years left with my team), not what it would be to you. Since I am not shopping him and you keep asking about him I set the price it would require to move him. Its too much for you, fine I was never trying to move him in the first place.
I guess the logical response would be that if a guy comes to me with an offer that is fair in the first place, my counter offer will be fair and there is a better possibility of getting a deal done. If a guys lowballs me, he can expect a low ball offer back and for negotiations to be less likely to end in a deal being made.
Kirk, the only reason I suggested that you "threw Cal under the bus" was because of his reaction to what you said.
I thought this thread was to discuss the deals themselves, not "Why didn't he shop the player to me/other teams/etc.?"
I have talked deal with one GM in regards to dealing Lecavalier or Thornton. I don't intend to shop them around, but if we would have come to a conclusion on that deal, on that day, oh well. I don't intend to shop them...but if someone comes up and says...."I know you probably won't deal Thornton, but I was thinking...X, X and X?"
Could happen.
No one tells you how to approach your dealing, why would you give your opinion on how and who to shop?
**Stipulation on deal is with unknown factor of RFA next season, with a new rfa calculator coming in, Atlanta has option to send P.Martin back to Philly for Cal 1st**
Bryce made it pretty apparent the only viable solution is to replicate (or come close to replicating) NHL salary. That should give you an indication. My guess is he's going to be between 3.75 and 4 million. The thing I like about using NHL salaries is that their contracts have already taken into account the inflation of UFA. OR the deflation of being a bit younger.

its not martin that is the rfa.. i have alot of other guys like heatley-seabrook-kesler-mcarthur-JDD so i really dont know what " (or come close to replicating) " with not having exact $$ i wouldnt put my team over cap without knowing. having this flexibility i think i should be able to manage the new cap and rfa system
That deal is not being processed as in. A new calculator that will be in effect is being rolled out tonight and the teams can either do the deal or not.
