As we get things rolling around here. I'm interested to see where everone thinks the current premier FHL talent is. Based on their current BRHL contract, what, in your opinion, if we redid the original entry draft, what would be the top 10?
Here's mine
Alex Ovechkin Sidney Crosby Evgeni Malkin Dion Phaneuf Roberto Luongo Ilya Kovalchuk Carey Price Vinny LeCavalier Henrik Zetterberg Joe Thornton
i think you are both forgetting the fact that we had to play 2 years of FHL with the players, and their rates... so a guy like price wouldnt be anywhere near the top 10 because you havent gotten anything from him in the 2 years we have played...
my top 10:
ovechkin crosby phaneuf luongo heatley zetterberg e. staal malkin (this is with only 2 years service out of 3) bouwmeester gonchar
also recieving votes: selanne, alfreddson, kovalchuk, thornton, lecalvier, turco, kiprusoff, stastny, m. richards, getzlaf

rex brings up a solid point, price wasn't even close to the ratings he has now, if we're redoing the draft today with current ratings it's a different story.... ratings aren't everything, contract situation is a big point in picking....
Current Contract/This season's ratings 1. Sidney Crosby - Cheap Contract for another year, but talent will outweigh his next contract 2. Alexander Ovechkin - see above 3. Evengi Malkin - 2 years at cheap contract 4. Roberto Luongo - Franchise goalie who will remain RFA after contract expires 5. Dion Phaneuf - Needs a new contract but scary ratings 6. Jay Bouwmeester - 4 years at 3.75 mill is a bargain for this defenseman 7. Marty Turco - 4 years at 4.75 is perfect for a starting goalie leaving plenty of cap room 8. Sergei Gonchar - 3 years left for 3.5 mill contract for a veteran defenseman 9. Jarome Iginla - power forward for 3 years at 6 mill 10. Nicklas Backstrom - 3 years of a centre playing with Ovechkin, his numbers can only get better

heatley and Z would have to be ahead of iginla for the salary purposes, no??
also kiprusoff at 2.9 for the first 3 years of his deal is a real bargain... more so than turco... IMO.. and stastny has had better rates than backstrom at an ELC...

heatley and zetterberg have one good year of a contract left, but with UFA so close, they'll be paid over 7 mill easy on a long term contract.... ratings and contract wise, iginla's better
You guys wouldn't have a chance if you let me pick a team from scratch.....LoL. It would be interesting to see though after lots of GM's have been around for a while and can forsee how stuff changes over a couple of years.
If I had the 10th pick in the first draft, this would have been my list:
1. Sidney Crosby 2. Alexander Ovechkin 3. Geno Malkin 4. Dany Heatley 5. Henrik Zetterberg 6. Dion Phaneuf 7. Jonathan Towes 8. Patrick Kane 9. Sergie Gonchar 10. Marc-Andre Fleury
And no, I didn't look at contracts at all. These are the best of the best of the best. If you have to pay them a lot of money, you work around them.
Ovechkin, Malkin and Gonchar would be the only Russians on my list. I didn't trust them before, and now with the KHL throwing money around, I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.
Gonchar was horribly underrated in the NHL, and it was a shame he didnt even get nominated for the Norris this season. Sure, he puts up insane numbers on that Pittsburgh Powerplay, but his defensive ability is very underrated. He also makes his partners better: Eaton, Scuderi, Orpik all played their best hockey of their careers when they were playing alongside Gonch this season. Maybe playing all the Western Conference teams twice a year will help him gain the respect out west he deserves.
Fleury is the same as Gonchar. If he doesn't get hurt last season, he has another 40+ win season and Vezna consideration. Lundqvist, Brodure, Luongo may be better right now, but the combination of Fleury's age, skill, potential, and the team in front of him make him the number 1 goalie on my list.
