So as I'm sure most of you know myself and former GM Aaron Uruski enjoy scouting young talent in and around the Region of Calgary, Alberta. In fact if there could be money made at that in this league like winning the cup I would certainly just continually rebuild.
I'm currently just graduated from University and waiting for the paperwork to go through so I can start my career as a Mortgage Broker here in Calgary. I start work the first of july so until then I've pretty much had a 1 month break in between school and Career. So I was enjoying the sun a bit today but got a little bored.
As most of you know the 2008 NHL Entry Draft is tomorrow night and I'm sure many of you are just as excited as I am. Furthermore I'm sure each of you have hopes that YOUR nhl club takes the player you want them to take. Well, on June 19th I took that a step further.
I had previously had Ken King's (flames president) email because I had an appointment with him at one point this last winter. So I figured the email would stay consistent with Darryl Sutter, and so I thought I'd give it a shot. So I email Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter:
@11:36 Dear Mr. Sutter,
I realize you have an experienced and competent scouting staff, and that this email is in fact is quite precocious. However, as an amateur scout and analyzing young talent for years coupled with my love for this organization-I was unable to resist attempting to contact you.
I hope you will strongly consider taking PLAYER NAME if he's available. I understand you won't have likely got this far in the letter, but if by chance you do and you want to know why I think that I can give a full detailed report as to why.
I apologize once again for my ignorance, and this is quite an embarrassing experience. But simply put: I care too much.
Sincerely,
Luke Wile

@2:30 I proceeded to send him a full 1 and a half page scouting report on the player. No response yet.
PS the report was spot and on the guy is a top 12 talent but is underrated.
I'll keep you posted.

So if this works out for you and they like your work maybe you'll become a pro scout ;) However, you do that, and "turn pro" so to speak, thus giving up your amateur status, you may have to be booted from the BRHL2 as we're clearly all just a bunch of amateurs... LOL

Again, that's pretty cool man.
Steve
It's true.. I have to check with George every year to see if he's gonna have to be booted and give some other GMs here a chance at winning a BRHL league.. But he hasn't turned pro.. ;)

You are doing a fantastic job. The brilliance you have displayed in signing your key players to big money, long term deals is truly an innovative practice. Please give Daymond Langkow 5 million plus as is rumoured. He's a fantastic number 1 center.
Youdon't need a 2nd line or ay depth guys, just keep signing AHL bums, and geezers to contract to round out that depth chart, especially since you have played it smart and not drafted anyone decent in years who is ready to come through the pipeline. They would just cost more money, who needs them??
And you selection of coaches has been brilliant as well. Keep up the great work. We know that the Flames future is in good hands.
LOL...I scouted for a bit for an NHL agent. I worked for HF, McKeen's....and still, all I have for a claim to fame is 4 FHL titles....and the guys at work calling me GM George when I bitch about Kevin Lowe....
Hey Luke, wicked cool man. I already had respect for ya but you just cranked it up quite a bit. Very ballsy move on your part but you have nothing to lose, I love it. You share my dream as well of being a Pro hockey scout, etc. I've send countless emails as well pretty much along the same lines but havent ever recieved a reply. Its really a relief to find out that regular people do actually get heard every now and then and I truly hope that you catch a break. I love being a fireman its the best job in the world...........that is next to being a pro hockey scout. My dream growing up was to scout for an pro hockey team and eventually become a GM. Who knows if things work out for ya maybe by some grace of God you'll take me on with ya. Our buddy Garrett Hansford is mentioned regularly on NHL LIVE by EJ Hradek. I've run into several nhlers, scouts and coaches over the years and I'm not afraid to speak my opinions and views with hopes that they become realized and maybe even prompted for a position. Once while on vacation in Toronto about 8-9 yrs back I was into town to see the Hall of Fame and a Leafs game and I ran into Mike Keenan (one of my alltime favorites, not just because I'm a diehard Rangers fan). He was just leaving the hotel bar and i had a great 10 min conversation with him. I took the picture with him to prove it and i'll be getting it for you guys soon if you like. Anyway it revolved around me pointing out a few guys on Vancouver's farm team that I had seen over the last year via AHL games that deserved a legit shot and could seriously help the club. He probed further and demanded a reason for each one and how they could help exactly. Most would have been intimidated by this but I ate it up and gave him just what he asked for. It felt like 3 hrs worth of hockey talk but it actually was 5-10 minutes. Either way its one of my claims to fame and I'll never forget it. Incredible experience.
Either way Luke good luck and great job and dont forget the little people of the BRHL2!!! P.S. I really would love to come work with ya so dont forget me -Joe NYRGM
I was writing for McKeen's at the time. So I have my press pass for the Remax/WHL Challenge in Red Deer.
So we are in the media room, chowing down. (Funny, the media gets Tim Horton's imported in Red Deer.) And there are about 40 media at least for this little exhibition game in Red Deer. I thought that was odd. That was actually the game that I realized that Weber was going to be pretty unreal.
Anyways, we are up in the press box and sitting there watching the game, me and another media guy. And to his left was where Darryl Sutter was sitting. He actually was genuinely excited when Seabrook walked around a dman and just wired a slapshot five hole. He leaned over and said "That kid is going to be awesome."
So midway through the first Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish showed up. Lowe, MacT and Sutter were talking and joking around a bit. It almost hurt the stigma I had of the Battle of Alberta...all that friendliness. But Sutter was a good guy, we talked to him about Bettman, the lockout etc.
Anyways, about midway through the third, Kevin Lowe asks me and the other media guy, "So how many of those Russians do you think are going to make the World Junior squad?" It was a legit inquiry.
And I thought to myself...."Kevin Lowe is asking me for my opinion on hockey players." That was a pretty fun day.
(FYI, I remember pegging it exactly....I think it ended up being three.)
That was actually the game that I realized that Weber was going to be pretty unreal.
Too bad his season wasn't all that stellar this year. Stupid Nashville ice crew has a massive rutt in the ice that he hits in the first period of the first game for the Predators this season and blows a knee. Geeeeez.
Very cool story though. Was this the first time the ADT Canada Russia challenge ran? I think it might have been. Slowly that competition is getting a little bit more exciting. I just wish Russia would send their A and B players rather than C lol.

This was 2004, I think...the lockout year. And the Russians have been getting better slowly...which is why Lowe asked the question in the first place. 20 players on the ice and only 3 good enough to be on the Russian WJC team.
if we are on about talking to certain coaches and gm's.. i had a great 15 minute discussion with one of my fav coaches.. ken hitch****. i told him he did faboulous things with Dallas when they won the cup... helped turn Modano to a great two way player, then in philly talked about how to play Roenick and all their big centers Handzus... of course this was 3 yrs ago or 4 yrs ago now.. i told him handzus has to get more minutes this guy is just a great solid player and he agreed but it was hard with getting him more minutes playhing behind primeau and roenick.. anyways here is a photo with him.
