The Thrashers went out today and aquired one of if not the premier goaltending asset in the entire BRHL2, Mr. Lundvist will be the cornerstone of the thrasher dynasty for many many seasons..
The team was sad to see star d-man Ryan Suter and blue-chip prospect Jonathon Bernier leave town in the trade that also saw a 1st and 2nd going to florida..
The teams General Manager Kirk Shuck has this to say about the deal today. "When i first started negociating with rich in florida i hadnt dreamed we would be able to peice together a deal so easy for such a big asset like lundvist. after having tested the waters on lundy for weeks we as a organization after dealing away Mike Smith for a defensman Brian Pothier we knew we would have to adress our goalie situation to start with we were looking at a backup possibly a M.Garon or D.Sabourin to team with Mason, but the team felt to make a competive run at the cup they would need to make a bigger statement and bring in a elite goalie. With allready knowing the asking price on what it would cost for lundvist and we werent going to pay the original asking price but a quick tweaking was made to the deal and we think down the road we will regret this deal but for right now the whole organization tripping like we just got some anna nicoles uppers. "
i think it is a good deal for me this year yes but long term im not sure suter is a star d-man phillipe 23-24 min a night allready in nashville.. bernier has chance to be an elite tender on the great young kings nhl team. the pick COULD end up being gagner-turris-kane.... not as lopsided as u think phillipe..

He plays 21:30 a night and an average d-man will play 20:00 a night so I wouldn't consider that a star. Bernier does have a chance but he played in the NHL this year and was obviously not of caliber and he's struggling in the juniors. Yes he's good but he's not Carey Price and won't make the NHL until he is 22-23 and I don,t know about you guys but I don't plan on being here 4 years from now. yes the pick COULD end up being one of those guys but it will likely turn into Alzner, Hamill, Couture, Ellerby, Sutter etc. Basically for the next 3 years this trade is a young d-man getting 21:30 minutes a night for one of the best young goalies in the NHL who costs 800k this year.
I guess it's good to see that some GM's don't care about now and are thinking 3-4 years ahead...
Actually, Kirk lowballed me a few times, but this was pretty much my offer.
A couple of reasons why I did this... 1) I really like Suter. Think he has a very good all around game at only 23 and think he will be a top pairing guy for a long time. 2) I really like Bernier. Yes he is struggling right now in junior, but the guy just went from opening night starter in the NHL to juniors. 3) A new theory of mine....star goalies are overrated in FHL leagues. Some reasons why (and please note, this is not my first league. I have been playing for about 7 years in leagues using FHL, and the examples I am giving are typical of the leagues I have been in)
1) There are only 3 goalies with an ov above 81 right now. There are 18 goalies with a rating between 81 ( Lundqvists rating) and 78. Think about this for a minute, the 21st highest rated goalie in our league is a measly 3 ratings points behind Lundqvist. And probably putting up better numbers. 2) Goalie stats are unpredictable. The highest rated goalie in our league is 6th in s%. The second highest isn't in the top-10. Neither is the third highest. Think about this, of the only 3 goalies that are rated well above average, only 1 is in the top-10, none in the top-5.
Lundqvists contract adds to his value, but that is up this year. He will probably sign for 5-6 mil. I can take that money and put it towards improving my defense, which I think will actually benefit me more than having a star goalie.
Can this blow up in my face? Absolutely.
But, on the other hand, I also have the potential to within 2-3 seasons have a top-pairing dman, above average goalie, and top-6 forward out of the deal. And a pretty decent prospect with the 2nd round pick, which will be in the top-35 picks.
personally i thought rich pulled kirks pants down in terms of overall value....
its gonna be tough for toronto to move giguere for anything close to this ransom.
and i completely agree with rich on goalies.....
perfect example: game days 11 and 12.... philly-pittsburgh, pittsburgh philly. sabourin starts the 1st night and i win 2-1... next night luongo gives up 4 goals in a 4-4 tie...
just one example of a million, but you get where that might be frustrating..
