The Blues and the Hawks are two clubs heading in two different directions despite being in the top ten teams. Chicago had lost 4 in a row while the Blues had won 7 out of their last 10. The Chicago Blackhawks boast one of the best offences on paper in the league, with names like Marleau, Thornton, Lecavalier and Gaborik it's amazing that they are struggling. However, in the first of 8 meetings against Chicago, the game got off to a quick start.
The second line for the Blues has been strong since day 1 of the season, and they were responsible for the first goal of the game. Antropov scored his team leading 10th goal of the year just over 4 minutes into the game. Jamie Langenbrunner added to his team lead in points with an assist, while Kubina who saw his goal scoring streak ended this game added in an assist. The game turned a bit nasty as Marian Gaborik was caught kicking at Ryan Malone after a big hit. Gaborik was caught for a five minute major, but stayed in the game. This infuriated Coach Vigneault as he thought Gaborik should have been tossed.
In the second, the Blues erupted for three goals despite taking the only penalty in the period. The Blues third line hasn't contributed much, but with the trade bringing in Danius Zubrus for Matt Cullen. More offense was expected and Boyd Devereaux scored his first of the year from Cleary and Gleason. Then Recchi scored his 4th and 5th of the year, continuing his 4 game goal scoring streak. Frolov assisted on both of the goals, bringing his point total to 15 and second in team scoring. Frolov is chasing Langenbrunner, who added an assist on Recchi's second of the game.
The Hawks had 26 shots on the Blues goalie Nabakov, and it was fitting that arguably their biggest star Vincent Lecavalier scored the goal. Marian Gaborik and Niclas Wallin had the assists on the goal. But one goal was all the Hawks could manage, leaving them in 5th place in the conference with 17 points from 14 games, while the Blues take over 1st place with 20 points in 13 games.
The Blues now return home for a game against Columbus, then go on a two game road trip to Nashville and Phoenix, before facing another cup contender Kari Lehtonen and the Calgary Flames at home.
