I agree. The rules are in place before the season and everyone knows them. If there was a miscommunication that is between the GM and the league.
However, people do have a right to comment on the rules, with an eye towards changing it for NEXT season where everyone would be advised of the rules before the offseason.
I think that the league has to constantly evolve. Every pro sports league in the entire world does. So when this stuff is brought up its perfectly legit in my mind - as long as we act civilized and not misspell peopls names on purpose, type in all caps lock or nag one another for whatever reason. ---------------------
There are a couple angles on this, and I think the biggest one that people need to realize is that this could happen to them. When it does, you'd be pretty pissed off too if it was unjust or because of something obscure. Now I dont know about you guys, but when Crosby signs his 8.7M dollar deal on the Sabres and is the top paid player on our team, we are going to be watching the cap very often, but I think Sharks is right, its ridiculous to think we could lose him for maybe taking a vacation or being out for a night and not checking the sim or any other reason that revolves around having a life.
Its just quite simply way too big of a consequence. Why is the floor different from the ceiling?
Offence for going below the Salary Floor: a. 1st Offense: Suspension of the highest rated (OV) player for 10 games, $2,000,000 fine. b. 2nd Offense: Suspension of the highest rated (OV) player for 25 games, $4,000,000 fine. c. 3rd Offense: Suspension of the highest rated (OV) player for the remainder of the season. The Suspended player will become a UFA at seasons end.
This is how it should be at the ceiling as well. Just cause the team at the bottom already really sucks and it would be "mean" to take his best player, doesnt mean that we should be able to take a strong teams best player that much easier. Both offences are equally wrong.
I think the system works, and should not be changed.
One strike and your out.
Works in the BRHL, works in the BRHL2.

I disagree with a few points, but the one I want to make note of, is the one about why the floor penalty is different from the cap penalty.
If a team has to sign a bum for big money to reach the floor, losing their highest paid player isn't a penalty. Usually teams under the floor are rebuilding, so the loss of draft picks is the best deterent.
I am glad that this has sparked a thread on a possible rule change but the COL situation had was not really a point of going over, rather than a miscommunication with the league. I have been told it is being reviewed, and if it is done correctly, it will be reversed.
That being said, I do think that the cap rules are something that need to be looked at next off-season, and i do agree with CHI that the cap floor penalty should be of equal value (losing pick) instead of losing highest paid player.
