The backup goaltender position was the only job really up for grabs this preseason in Detroit.
Marc Andre Fleury faced no competition for the starting job, so he only played one game in the preseason (2.00GAA and a .920 save%). The real competition was between big veteran free agent signing Chris Osgood and Jason Bacashihua, the 24 year old acquired during the offseason from Anaheim.
Osgood was the front runner heading into camp, which may have hurt his chances. Feeling like he was brought in to backup MA Fleury, maybe he didn't feel like he had to try hard during the preseason games. Or, maybe it's just father time ticking on his doorstep. Whatever the reason, he is on his way to the AHL. JASON BACASHIHUA has won the backup goaltender position in Detroit.
Osgood was 2-3 with an abismal 4.12 GAA and .863 save% during 5 preseason games. Bacashihua, playing behind the same roster, was 1-2-1 in 4 starts, with a very impressive 2.09GAA and a .921 save%
Osgood has requested a trade, but GM MacDonald had no comment on the matter. With his poor stats, plus the fine for trading a recently signed free agent, Osgood might have to get used to playing in the AHL for a while. A trade to a differnt team may reignite his fire for playing, and any team interested in him can send me a message.
