Actually the only positive side is that you can control the length of the deal (ie. if the other team offers a $5mill deal for one year and you offer a $5.5mill deal for 5 years).
the other upside is that if another team wants to make a winning bid they have to give up more compensatory picks
3-3.99 mill signings means a first rounder has to be provided!
toronto has just assured that he will get at least a first rounder if he doesnt have the winning bid and let's another team sign him
Not really because if he offered 3M it's because he plans on keeping the player hence would have matched any offer below which means the compensation doesn't matter.

Not necessarily.....If Toronto decided that he would rather have a 1st round pick then Avery, but would match anything else, he now ends up with the compensation he wants or the player. Basically he is risking some money for the chance to end up with a 1st round pick.

if another team bids 3.2 or higher and toronto lets the player go and gets the first round pick then he either was smart for driving up the price (which he gains by doing so, hence intentions were not as you thought) or just lucky
toronto has a vested interest in ensuring that REGARDLESS whether he decides to match or not, having the winning bid be at least 3 mill ensures he gets a first rounder at the very least!
The chance is about 0.1% since no one will give a 1st round pick for Avery, actually seeing some of the stupid moves made by GM's it may be bigger than that which I guess makes it a good move by Toronto?
Is it against the rules to trade for a teams guy that he signed in UFA and cover the fine he receives for dealing the UFA? Prob not, but just wondering.

i paid my fine.... but good to know for other signings to come!
like I said, it became a good move because there's stupid GM's in this league.
I take offense to that.
Given the rediculous price to sign 1st line UFA talent (yep, avery is a first liner on my team), and the fact that I'm only giving a late 1st for a 74 OV guy who is only 26 it made sense for my team. It wouldn't make sense for some teams though, I do agree with that.
Tor bidding on him is silly because if you didn't want him, why not sign him for 1 million or whatever he demanded, then trade him. If I am willing to give a 1st for him and that inflated salary I surely would have paid even more to get him with a 1 million salary.

Some would argue it was a good move from the minute it was made, given the results, but people decide to comment before letting everything play out. Its still hasn't fully played out until I decided to match the final offer or not. That is still to be determined.
