John and James in San Jose, are they brothers? There is an announcement in the "away" section about a trip to Europe ending on the 18th, the day before the UFA period begins! They didn't qualify an offer to Khabibulin (77 ov) but that's okay because they have an equally not-bad Raycroft (77 ov). Still...
Send down to the farm: Bickell (61 ov), Gove (59 ov), Gillies (56 ov)
Stuart - Brewer Meszaros - Seabrook Leopold - Preissing
Send down to the farm: Johnson (63 ov), M. Stuart (60 ov)
Raycroft Backup goalie
San Jose needs two more goalies to meet the league minimum of three rated g. The team has under $18 million in salary commitments with every key position filled! If there is any team whose best interests is to sign star veteran UFA and trade them away later it is San Jose. Alternatively, this team could become a cup contender through UFA.
Anaheim San Jose Los Angeles Phoenix Vancouver Edmonton Toronto Buffalo NYR Washington Florida
Partial players (some cap room)
Columbus St. Louis Dallas Detroit Boston Pittsburgh NYI Carolina
Small players (near cap)
Atlanta Tampa Bay Montreal Ottawa Philly New Jersey Calgary Colorado Chicago Minnesota Nashville
It will be interesting out west. All three Californian teams and Phoenix could be big players and are natural rivals. And their other opponent, Dallas, has some cap room. Who'll get the advantage in this Pacific Division?
CENTER LEFT WING RIGHT WING DEFENCE DEFENCE 1 Chris Drury Darcy Tucker Glen Murray Brian Rafalski Dan Hamhuis 2 Daymond Langkow Kyle Calder Chris Kunitz Vitaly Vishnevski Jason Smith 3 Samuel Pahlsson Derek Boogaard Niklas Hagman Andrew Alberts Aaron Miller 4 Michael Rupp Ryan Johnson Ruslan Fedotenko Brian Rafalski Dan Hamhuis

I have a few targets in FA, but mainly looking to add depth.

Rangers have 40 Million + to spend and around 15-20 Mil in cap space. Rangers are looking for an upgrade at every position and it looks like we'll be able to get it.
I like how many people say they'll be able to get whoever they want.. that just leads to bad news.. plus, don't forget this little tidbit.
C. Signing Bonuses
i. All signing bones cannot exceed 50% of the total years value of the contract. For example a 3 year deal worth $1,000,000 per season would equal a signing bonus of a maximum of $1,500,000. Please adhere to this formula when sending in offers: (Contract Length x Dollar Amount) / 2 = Maximum Signing Bonus.
so if you offered someone a 1 million dollar contract a year for 3 years with the max 1.5 mil SB.. you'd be looking at a total offer of 1.5 mil per season

I thought it odd that you gave up three 2nd round picks and Chistov to add 13 million you CANNOT use in the UFA process. As the Kings g.m. just pointed out, bonus amounts are limited to half a contract's value, and there's no way you'll be using up your initial 27 mill joe, so adding 13 mill more was... useless.
That said, in terms of general team management, the money will assure that your team stays in the black even if it maxes salaries to the cap ceiling.
send to the farm, as call-ups: Johnson (69 ov) Boogard (67 ov), Rupp (67 ov)
Rafalski - Hamhuis Vishnevski - Smith Alberts - Miller
Lehtonen backup goalie
send down to farm: Krahn (64 ov)

Ideally you'll pick up a 2nd LW, 3rd RW and 4th C.
Good luck! With less than $5 million of cap room, the UFA process is probably not going to be your best bet.
Most teams want to be competitive now and it's hard to have a line-up without weaknesses when 29 other teams want to improve their competitiveness. Teams like Calgary's, that only need supporting players, might be best served to wait for some teams to be out of the playoff race by December/January, and then get the assets needed to solidy the decent core in its bid for a cup run.
The Rangers can solidify its prospect base and draft picks if it goes into selling mode of some 70+ OV players to all those teams in need of third and fourth line impact depth players.
There's no way the NYR is going to be able to meet all its needs to be ideally competitive through the UFA process. Presenting the Rangers are a mere $ 12 million under the cap and that won't get a first line, first defensive pairing and a starting goaltender.
Alternative: If any team is primed to sit on its assets and treat the first half of the season as a rebuilding period, it's the Rangers!
Don't forget that the bonuses are half the TOTAL contract value...so if he adds $15M in cap space, for each of the next 4 years, that is $60M, so he could conceivably give out $30M in bonuses, leaving him with $10M to get through the season.
Yes....we would be interested in some pieces...but with no cap room to speak of...we are pretty much limited to whatever scraps people leave over. :)
With 39.3 million in salary commitments your team will indeed be a small player on the UFA market. There simply is not enough cap room there to sign a first line player, top defensive player or decent goalie. With under 5 million in cap room, the Blackhawks can compete for a couple of third and fourth liners, which is good enough (!) as your team seems to only need wingers for Handzus on the back line. And since your fourth line pivot is so talented, especially in passing, some veteran finishers could provide scoring depth, perhaps with some speed or hitting.
The Hawks' best bets:

Handzus is moving to the wing....so as far as the Hawks depth chart goes....
As for salary committments, we expect to be around $42 million after everyone signs. So we have less than you think for cap space.....but we feel like contenders....most certainly.
How the frick do you expect to sign Markov and Dumont for 3M combined George? Dumont is worth 3M (making 2.5M in real life, except that hes also coming off a career year and deserves a raise) and Markov is worth at least 5M as one of the top dmen in the game.
