Detroit only had three picks in the 2007 draft, using most of their draft assets in deals to bring in young NHL'ers.
The Redwings ended up with 3 late picks, and made the most of them.
BRHL2 Det 5th round (132 overall) Ben Wright Defenseman
Drafted by Columbus in the 4th round (113 overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry draft. 6.0B on hockey's future
An overlooked WHL defenseman. An intelligent, stay-at-home defenseman with a strong work ethic and attractive technical package (thats what she said!). Was talk of him being picked two rounds earlier, but his skating isn't as good as his other skills. Had a solid year in juniors, puting up 47 points in 64 games, along with 108 PIM.
He signed a pro tryout contract late last season, should get a good shot at making the AHL team this season, however Columbus has a defensive loggam down there, so he has to step up to earn his playing time.
Det 6th round 162 overall Matt Marquardt Left Wing
Drafted by Columbus Blue Jackets in the 7th round (194overall) in the 2006 NHL entry draft 6.0C on hockey's future
Another Bluejacket prospect, Marquardt is a big kid at 6'2", 222 lbs at age 19. He is a power winger, who put up an impressive 41 goals in the QMJHL last season. He has NHL size and an NHL shot. Will spend next season back in juniors, but will get an extended look in the AHL the following season. Eventual role will be a 3rd line player with offensive upside, could be more if his skating and agility continues to progress.
Detroit 7th round selection (192 overall) Jamie Hunt Defenseman
Undrafted in the NHL, signed as a free agent with Washington. 6.0D on hockey's future
Extremely quick and a good skater, Hunt uses skill and quickness to join the rush. Soild passing skills, and not a defensive liability in his own zone. Could be a solid NHL'er one day, if he can bulk up on his 6'2", 200lbs frame.
After completing 3 years at Mercyhurst College, he spent the 2006-2007 season in the AHL. He had 12 points in 36 games, playing good enough to earn a cup of coffee in Washington for one game. He missed a significant part of the season with a wrist injury. Will probably play for Hershey this year.
Well, that is my collection of magic beans. For having late round picks, im satisfied. Got guys with good upside, and two guys already on professional contracts.
