Opinions on Trades- Preseason 2007

I'm the one who traded him and 30 wouldn't shock me at all. 40 wouldn't shock me. of course, neither would 15, which is why I made the trade.

To NJ: Jack Johnson, Wojtek Wolski and Gary Roberts

To SJ: Mikka Kiprusoff, Anti Laaksonen and Jon Sim

Discuss...

Why I made the deal:

Raycroft NHL status is a huge question mark
Elite goalies are rarely available in FHLs
Kipper (83ov) at 2years for $2.9M is dirt cheap

Jack Johnson is gonna be a star...but has been average at best so far this NHL season
Wolski is great, but will be stuck behind Statsny, Sakic and Smyth for a while in COL
Roberts, was traded due to cap reasons...but at 40years old he was just a band-aid anyways

I went from having one of the worst goaltending situations is the league...to one of the best. yes I lost Wolski...but i have other great young forwards like Michalek, Parise, Staal, Justin Williams, AO, Horton to lead my offense for many years....same for my D with Brewer, Stuart, Meszaros, Leopold and Seabrook

Lack of depth on my bottom 6 forward lines is an issue for my team now... something i will actively be working on.

Despite the lack of depth, I feel that I can contend for the cup...I guess time will tell.

I will once again have great cap room available next offseason....so I expect to be a contender for a very long time

i think you made a great deal, not saying you underpaid for kipper, but you could part with what you gave up in order to acquire one of the best goalies in the league...

great move!

I would say good move, if Kipper turns around his tough start, then great move.

I agree with STL's comment.... i think the deal is great for both myself and NJ.... I did pay a hefty price for Kipper....but i dealt assets from positions of strength so i didnt really hurt my team all that much.

overall, I get my star #1 Goalie...NJ gets 2 great young studs to build around.....

everybody wins.

WHen I told you I was thinking about moving price zajac and Lee for Brody and Whitney you're like "oh what a dumb deal I thought you were smarter than that ect" Sounds very hypocritical now.

And which trade is this an opinion of?  What is the purpose of calling another GM a hypocrite?

I like the trade for both teams. For San Jose, they are definitely built for this season. They have a whole bunch of UFAs, and they were not going to win with Raycroft.

For New Jersey, they got a potential #1 dman, one of the hardest things to find, and a potential All-Star forward. Both of them will be making an impact soon.

Its really nice to see the positive comments coming from fellow GMs....kinda refreshing to finally have a fair trade to discuss.......usually these boards are full of complains about one-sided transactions.

The best part is that this deal was really simple to make with NJ.....we only exchanged maybe 5 PMs before agreeing on a pretty big trade.....the key to the deal was the respect that we both had for player values and team needs

From the get-go neither of us tried to "low-ball" the other....and thats why we were able to get a deal done...

let this be a lesson to all GMs who try to offer rip-off other GMs rather then make the effort to find a deal that benefits both teams.

OH cram it george. Why dont you mind your own business. Honestly, SJ was a jerk to me after the Price/Broduer trade calling me an idiot and he goes and does the same thing..of course im going to call him out.

Ah, the mature response.

Sarcasm, very refreshing change up..I'm pretty fed up with grandpa george trying to be commish and getting into other people's business.
Alright im done for a while. You'll get what you want George silence on the board, because the only other people who ever post are Jay, Kirk, and Rex and a few others occasionally.

my opinion on the deal is one that NJ wins by a very large margin.

Wolski is a very very good young player and will be playing on a top 6 forward spot with elite talent for the next 2-3 years at least....

Jack Johnson is a stud and is already getting the top-line minutes that most young dmen are never trusted with (also 1 reason LA goalies get lit-up with ease)

Kipper is an elite goalie and with great salary is no slouch either for value, but has played so-so to start the season again in NHL...

Roberts is worth more than sim and laaksonen because hes got 2 years on his deal.

So in my opinion NJ wins on both parts of this deal.

But obviously this is not a knock on SJ GM skills, just an example of teams willing to pay premium price for cup-runs in a pay league. (this would never get done in a non-pay league because of the value of youth, which SJ realizes)

Anyways thats my 2 cents.

PS thanks for starting a good-spirited debate about a fair trade... these are rare indeed.
