League wide signing bonus debate

Well to be quite honest i'm not sure yet what I think about it, but what I do know is that I'd like the league to be run in parallel with the NHL as much as possible and having such a significant amount of money not counting against the cap seems to be sort of rediculous. The way things are right now it's almost as if their isn't a cap.

Just wondering if how people feel. I know Phillippe wants the huge SB's since he has all that cash, which is understandable. Is there any way we could decrease the amounts in which people get cash so that cash is more of a asset and maybe top teams only have 8-12 million left over to work with (not 40 million which is what I think phillippee has) and bottom teams have 0 or 1 million. Thats how i could see the SB's working the best.

Or maybe you think we should just have SBs count for something else and nothing to do with contracts?

SBs in general are something which make players want to sign contracts more since its upfront cash. Maybe we use it as a tiebreaker of some sort for UFAs. I don't know i'm just brainstorming. I just see this as the biggest flaw in the league the way it is.

Like i said when we had this debate before. The way a signing bonus is suppose to work is quite simple and the way I understand it is:

1) The league has a rule as to the % of a players contract that is allowed to be a bonus. So like 20 % of the contract or something. So for example if a player is to be signed for 10$, 8 of that would be in his contract and 2 would be in a bonus.

2) the signing bonus counts against the cap

3) the team profits because it allows they to free up money or cap space in different years of the comtract. So you would be able to be able to pay your star player more money in the first year of his deal when you re-building and then less over the rest of the contract when your making cup runs and looking to and players.

4) The player profits by getting more money up front

This is how i feel it should work, because as Luke stated, having large signing bonuses and bonuses that don't count against the cap makes the cap almost pointless since it is so easy to stay under.

Any thoughts?
