I agree to a certain degree, but if you look at it the other way, and say we come to some sort of contract extention for a year or whatever can be decided, it gives us a chance to trade those players and rebuild like that. I don;t think it delays as much as you'd think. If a GM doesn't do his job then yes, your right. It's prolonging the enevitable. But if he's smart and does his job, he wont have to deal with it as much next year. As long as there's no collusion....
I think there are other ways to go about it personally. If a team is in bad shape, allow them to resign a player or two without using their franchise tags (and no trade clauses). If Columbus has Sakic and Boucher(depending on the price) they would have a decent shot at making some waves this year, and if not, some assets worth a lot at the deadline. You can also give them a financial boost. If a team was in such dire straits that it wasn't enough, a modified disperal draft may be in order, something like each team protects like 3 players, than you draft for say 5 rounds, then return all undrafted back to their teams.
The other thing is that it doesn't necessarily help. This year you have a team with lots of assets in Detroit. Mine is pretty solid, but if Detroit wasn't open, there still wouldn't be enough to go around. When I joined the three open teams were mine, Columbus, and Washington. If those were the only three open, a dispersal draft would only mean that there were three teams in terrible shape instead of two.
Don't forget also that it affects other teams as well. What if a team had Columbus or Washington's first in 2008? Basically giving those teams new players would mess those teams up pretty bad.
This probably won't affect me either way, as the decision seems to have been made for this season, but I just think that completely redrafting several teams a year is a little drastic.
Maybe you're right Florida. I don't mind you hanging on to lunqvist, detriot hanging on to Phaneuf, CLS hanging on to gagne ect.
Maybe for this year since we've already handed people teams and I don't think I'd be to happy losing Lundqvist, each team keeps 1 player. 5-10 of the next best players as choosen by bryce and eric go into a dispersal. All this could easily happen in 1 day.
I think this is a solution for this year, but maybe not future years. Ex what if NYI left (which we know he wouldn't) but star talent isn't really his strength, depth is. So while one team could hold on to lundqvist or phaneuf, whoever took over NYI would get martin hanzal or something..

You aren't aloud to trade your next years picks unless you've already paid for it. So this would never be an issue.
I would be all for the dispersal draft. Personally I don't see how it would really upset the league, and it could be done within the next week or so. All you'd really have to do would be to switch some players to different teams.
It probably wouldn't be a good idea to have one every year, especially if there are only 1-3 GM spots open, but with 6 new GMs, we could have a nice little draft and get to forge an identity for our teams.
I suggest having a 10 player draft where each team gets to protect 1 player. The commissioners or whomever could then select the 10 best players from every team and put them into a dispersal draft.
I personally would love it, and think it would give us new GMs a great start!
there is no way that Was, CBJ, Pho can feel as good about joining the BRHL2 as those GMs in Det, Fla, NJ. I am also going to put LA in this boat because he was definitely behind the 8-ball when he took over that team towards the end of last year.
If we had a 5 round dispersal with only the very best 5 assets from each club available, then every new club would be much better off from a competitive standpoint. Det, Fla, NJ would still have much better depth from an organizational standpoint, but the gap between the teams would be bridged.
and to answer a point that was made in this thread: YES, every single offseason a dispersal draft of the top players from each team should be done. this allows the league some liability coverage in case a rogue GM loads his team for a cup run then bails in the offseason. The dispersal draft will be a means to combat that, especially if a few other GMs are not asked back due to inactivity or else some other disruptions.
for instance this is exactly what we'd see in a 5 man dispersal draft: Det: Emery Phaneuf Kaberle Getzlaf Cammarelli OR Nabokov
Fla: Lundqvist Markov Whitney Zherdev J. Williams
LA: Legwand Hartnell Kronwall Ponikarovsky ?
NJ: Kiprusoff Martin Ohlund Doan Forsberg OR alfreddson OR jovanovski
Pho: Brodeur Selanne Whitney Shanahan Rozsival OR Zidlicky
Was: Jokinen McDonald Stempniak Perry Visnovsky
Quite obviously it wouldn't be fair to charge LA the same as Det. However, all GMs coming in have agreed to pay the $50 fee for the season. GREAT.
However, I really dont think with everything this league has to offer that Det, NJ, or Fla would have any kind of a problem taking a SLIGHTLY worse team overall than they originally signed up for....
and I will say right here, that If there is only bad teams available at the start of any new season that I will volunteer to go into the dispersal draft with my Flyers team (insert joke here).

This was something that was discussed because I personally thought we'd have trouble finding GM's but 6 GM's agreed to take the team they currently have so I say forget the draft, I don't think it's worth it at this point. If all 6 agree then I guess you can have it but otherwise it's not fair and I'm not sure Eric wants to spend time running it either.
THe fact that we found GMs for this year doesn't really fix the problem. I think long term it's best for the league but I think Eric has already made up his mind since we're full- If he's absolutely made his decision final then I will back it.
