I will weigh in, because I have an interest in this subject.
My opinion is that you get what you pay for. It was stated that when you join, you get the rights to the next years draft picks. If you are going to be allowed to trade them, then, logically, you own them.
Now, if at some point that a GM decides they are leaving during the season, they still have that property. If as some have stated the GM is intent on blowing up the team, then trading away all the picks/assets for one big run hurts the team for years.
The other point, is that Eric and Bryce know the GMs, they are the ones that need to step in if they feel an outgoing GM would act in less than the best interests of the team. If they have a good handle on the outgoing GM, they will make a good call on it. Count on it.
They can decide that a new GM should draft for his new team...that shouldn't affect anyone. But, I reiterate, that once a guy pays his $50, he owns the assets, and that includes the following year's draft picks. Regardless of what anyone thinks of an outgoing GM, he has something he has paid for, and if he isn't coming back, you are outright telling him to firesale the picks, because if he is leaving, he can't use them anyways.
You guys need to worry less about running the league, as opposed to running your teams. Let Eric and Bryce run the league.
Lastly, I say this because I am an outgoing GM, with a lot of picks in the next draft that thought about the firesale to go for it. But that isn't me. Even until the day I leave, I work in the best interests of the team. (And since I am a draft junkie, it would be fun that that is my last action as GM)
Thanks for the concern Pitts. I think I did go overboard a bit in this thread with a couple b****y remarks. It was out of pure frustration because of the fact that we went over all of this several weeks ago, came to a sort of conclusion (one that I was actually against) and then now people are coming back and going against the conclusion I thought we'd reached.
I was originally arguing the same concept that wild, jackets etc have been arguing and got swayed to the other side by CHI. Now Im almost at the point where I dont care either. I'll wait for Bryce or Eric to decide. I just dont want the draft to run while Im out of town the 30th and 1st or July 16-22 since it is probably THE SINGLE most important event for our team in the season.
Eric, Bryce, I really hope you can make that work! Thanks!
