Lots of trades this deadline.. one that stuck out for me
To Long Island: Lydman
To Buffalo: Hutchinson, Ulanov, 1st ('08), $ 500,000
Lydman is a solid defenseman and should get a decent re-rate but thats a steep price to pay but it could pay off. More interested in the risk thats involved in a move like this. I was in a similar position in the BRHL going into this season and thought I had a team that could make the playoffs and dealt my first to add someone I felt could contribute. Two months later, my team is lounging about 8 points back and I decided to blow it up.. now that pick I dealt is looking like a top 5 pick.. I see a similar thing happening here.
Yea, cap space is there for sure but UFA's are usually over priced and I find it very very difficult to build through UFA in the BRHL.. you add UFA's for the final piece.
Norrena is the current goalie.
Defense will be ok with Corvo, Pothier, Nummelin, Lydman.
Up front there are forwards of Guerin and Nolan.. there are a lot of holes to fill to make the playoffs there..
But hey.. moving the pick certainly points what direction the team is going
Horrible, horrible move in my opinion. For Lydman? The 1st should have been more than enough. That pick is easily, and I mean very very very very very easily going to be top 3.
This league never ceases to amaze

To Boston: Chris Pronger, Doug Murray, Jocelyn Thibault, Ken Klee, Wade Brookbank, Denis Istomin, Viktor Dovgan
Lydman has 20+ minutes per game, 14 assists, 100+ hits, 100+ blocked shots... does everything very well, and that's with some games missed due to earlier injury!
NYI backup goalie: Norrena GRADE: B- (has 14 NHL wins, will be decent enough for p/t work)
NYI third line: Park-Hinote-Vigier GRADE: B (speed, hard hitting and defensive ability)
NYI second line: Peltonen-Metropolit-Nolan GRADE: B (decent returning season, 82 combined NHL points to date)
NYI first line right winger: Guerin GRADE: A (back to star status with very good season)
NYI first line centre and left wing: free agency and/or offseason trade NYI starting goaltender: free agency and/or offseason trade
NYI farm club: STOCKED with well re-rated AHL-achieving young prospects Grade: A (expects to compete for farm league championship)
NYI prospect list: PLENTY of second and third tier guys who have been developing nicely GRADE: B+ (took out the trash in earlier trades, left with performing lesser knowns and a couple disappointing hyped guys)
I'm not disputing that you have some good young prospects that may eventually develop into decent players, but wouldn't it then follow logically to keep your 1st rounder in a year where you'll likely finish in the bottom five. Lydman is a very replaceable defenseman.
Now that is a nice little write-up, but come on now, short of rocking the UFA market this season your team is going to be a bottom dweller for at least next season.

Sorry Matt but the Bluejackets organization looks pretty weak after this season's postseason push. You have mortgaged Columbus' future, with the prospect and farm system empty of talent and many starting quality NHLers gone with nothing in return as UFA (no tags can be used) will be: Sakic, Recchi, Boucher as well as Bondra, Norstrom, Skrastins, Cejanek, and the freed salary of Sakic's will be largely eaten up by big raises expected by Gagne and Gionta.
Different strategy, worth it if at least go deep into this year's playoffs. A first round upset or second round losing battle could make this strategy suspect.
Well it will certainly be worth it when I have a cup to show for it

and you've done a fine job putting your pro team in position to compete to win the conference
even getting to the conference finals will put $150 bucks in your pants and if you have the gutts to pony up the cash and take that organization next season then kuddos to you

what would you consider a line with stoll or sykora with huselius and hemsky??????? if urs is a B mine and 20-25 of the other brhl teams got u beat
Of course a Hemsky, Huselius, Sykora line would be awesome (who'd play centre lol)
But 20-25 other teams got me beat? Sure doesn't look like it.
In fact, I've done a lot of analyzes of this season's teams and over half of playoff positioned teams have 74-75 ov guys on the second line, some teams much less on average.
This season, in playoff positioned 2nd lines in the Eastern conference:
Montreal has Pettinger-Halpern-Hunter
Carolina has Ladd-Straka-Stewart Pittsburgh has Schaefer-White-Svatos Boston has Samsonov-Connolly-Lupul
The Bruins are trying Connolly out on the top line but whether that'll stick is another matter. My point is: The NYI 2nd line of next season is expected to be comparable to 2nd lines like these. The Isles strategy is to be in playoff positioning come next year's trade deadline and feel might have the second line to do so. An extra trade or two could be made down the road, but the organizational goal to make the playoffs next year might be within sight with the planned 2nd line. That's the standing plan. Of course opportunities might arise, and the team does have assets to trade, though heavy trading is not expected, though as noted there are three big acquisitions to be made in goal and first line centre and left wing.
philly wrote: mitchell... hes cheaper, younger, and will rerate much better than ****ing lydman Mitchell 5 points in 42 games, Lydman 15points in 48 games Mitchell 24 hits, Lydman 98 hits Mitchell 87 blocked shots, Lydman 120 blocked shots Mitchell 15 takeaways, Lydman 20 takeaways
Mitchell plays an extra minute and a half a game, on the first penalty kill unit (and no pp time, 19 seconds per game) whereas Lydman at 20:38 per game is admittedly only on the second penalty kill unit but is also on the second powerplay unit (based on pp ice time for d-men).
The fact is, Mitchell is a defensive defenseman and as such is good, but should have more intensity (hitting).
Lydman is a two-way, puck-moving, quick, hitting, shot-blocking force who helps out in all situations and typifies the sort of new-NHL style which has made his Sabres so successful.
