We have had some good teams but just haven't had the finish needed to get to the finals.
In '99 we ran into a very hot Hasek and really couldn't buy a goal.
In 2002 we got to the conference finals without Sundin. The whole city thought that it was our year once we made it past Ottawa in the second round. We really under estimated the Canes and badly missed our best player.
In the years in between we had some great series against Philly and Ottawa early in the playoffs. All teams involved played so hard that who ever came out on top wasn't going to last much longer.
I wasn't around in the 70's or 80's but we really got screwed over by Ballard. He didn't care about the team. Really seems that way now with MLSE. I hate what they are doing with the team. I don't understand how we can be at the cap with such little skill to show for it.
I think the biggest problem is that the city of Toronto won't allow for a rebuilding stage. MLSE is too concerened with the corporate fan base and forgets about the real fans. We will accept a rebuilding phase because we know that we need some young talent and a franchise player. Wellwood, Stajan and Steen are decent players but they aren't guys that are going to be labeleed as the "franchise".
Our current team is playing hard every night and winning some games. I'm sure the casual fan appreciates what this team is doing, but any real Leaf fan will tell you that we aren't going anywhere until management realizes what it takes to win in the new NHL.
It's a shame MLSE won't do the same thing with the Leafs as they did with the Raptors. I think they knew the Raptors were in big trouble if they didn't do some serious. The ACC will always be full for hockey no matter what, so they don't have to do anything major to make their league leading profits.

I am fully aware of the history of the Leafs. HNIC has been cramming the games down the throats of Westerners for decades.
But don't worry, they might win....after a major overhaul or two.
