The last subsection under each and every tag rule has the following:
"Unrestricted player negotiations are not limited to an amount of negotiations like RFA. All Unrestricted negotiations will go through Bryce and Eric."
It's listed three times, with each tag discussion.
Why we can't negotiate SALARY and LENGTH of such a contract is beyond me. We can only use one every two seasons so it's not like it'll abuse the free agency period. It sure helps spread out the veterans, gives a small incentive to hold onto ONE or at most two old guys when otherwise we see some teams built on geriatrics and others on diapers.

Well the length can't be negotiated because that was agreed upon at the beginning of the season but was never added to the rules which it should be right now.

Being able to negotiate Length would absolutely destroy any resemblence of realistic free agency. There would be so many great players that would quite possibly never see another team and UFA status. Why not just "negotiate a 3 year extension every time then if you've got an elite player? You'd never ever have to lose him. Just slap a tag on him every 3 years.
Nobody's answered what I've brought up. If a tag is used so a team can keep a player they want in that OV range... what happens if that player doesn't agree to a new contract?
I good GM excels within the rules of the league no matter what they are.... I am very irritated by all this "Lets change the rules" talk.
Also as an add on, when I brought up the fact that tags were automatic one year extensions at the same salary, it wasn't with any attempt to "change the rules", but was brought up because that's what I was told a long time ago when I inquired about it. Again, I'm not going to go back and look at a year's worth of postings, and it's certainly possible that I was just told that via icq or e-mail. You say that people made trade decisions based on "negotiation"... I did, or actually didn't do a trade, based on what I was told in that they were automatic 1 year extensions at the same salary.

Point 1.....Exactly if you can negotiate long-term very few good players will ever hit the market and you end up with Martin Gelinas as teh UFA jewel
Point 2.....If we were to go the negotiation route, a team could try and tag another player in that range, or the player would test UFA, effectively the agent would hold all the power.
