East Rutherford, NJ – With the company of a busy fax machine and a bottle of Pinot Noir, the New Jersey Devils made a significant stride in altering the landscape of their team late Saturday night. The Devils won out on the Scott Niedermayer sweepstakes much to the surprise of their general manager. The Devils agreed to part ways with Jason Blake, Kristian Huselius, and Craig Rivet.
“When we heard a players of ‘Neids’ caliber was avail we tossed out hat into the ring, but certainly with some reservations. You can’t mortgage a team for one player but in the end we dealt what we feel is a much underrated defenseman and a pair of top 6 forwards for a guy capable of taking over a game.”
Several other teams were rumored to be the running but in the end it might have been the recent hot play of recently acquired Jason Blake that sealed the deal. Neidermayer is the second premier player acquired this season by the Devils and should provide a much needed offensive spark as well as some protection for goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. It’s apparent that the Devils are serious about trying to compete for the ‘Holy Grail’ of the inaugural BRHL2 season.
7 assists in 24 games with a +/- of minus-3 and 66 PIM, he took over and ruined many a game, unhappy that he was playing for Darryl Sutter, a very defensive-minded coach.
