Maybe I didn't read correctly but can they be done anytime or do they have to be done during the offseason.

I disagree with that, can't they only be done in the offseason in the NHL. If a player is stinking it up you can't all of a sudden buy him out. Otherwise why wouldn't the Flyers just buy out Hatcher.

I'll check into it and see, but I think you could still buy a guy out midseason in NHL as well, if anyone knows of a concrete ruling and has proof to back it up please advise.
Fair enough, but that's weird, I wonder why then they don't happen more often.

Yes i also read the ways they can attach the buyout to their cap, it either all goes onto one year or at a reduced rate over a few years, either way it is money they can't full spend on a new player to take his spot, the cap does still take a small hit.
