Newark, NJ- Matt DAgostini had his first two goals of the season, and goalie John Grahame made 39 saves to help the New Jersey Devils defeat the Edmonton Oilers, 5-1, on Monday night.
The first period was uneventful as neither team scored nor did either team commit an infraction.
But after a nice talking-to from Coach Peter Laviolette, the Devils (7-1-1) exploded for four markers in the second stanza.
DAgostini gave the home crowd something to cheer about just 31 seconds into the period. He and Valtteri Filppula broke out on a 2-on-1 against Oilerss defenseman Andreas Lilja. Filppula flipped the puck over the stick of a diving Lilja to a streaking DAgostini, who calmly wristed it underneath the water bottle for this first of the season, and the night.
Just 2:11 later, DAgostini added his second of the game. After Oilers goalie, Tyler Weiman, made a stop of a Brent Seabrook shot, the 24-year old DAgostini fired home the rebound. Filppula picked up his second assist of the period on the goal.
Filppula himself got in on the goal scoring at 10:35. Lubomir Visnovsky sent a snap shot from the right point that was deflected by Oilers Pat Kaleta. The puck found its way to an awaiting Filppula who sent it off the right post and in behind Weiman.
Martin Erat completed the scoring of the second with a slapshot at the 18-minute mark. Visnovsky, who was on the ice for all five Devils goals, and Shane Doan picked up the assists on the goal.
Sean Avery ending Grahames shutout bid just 1:20 into the third. It was Averys first of the season for the Oilers (4-5-0).
Doan added the last one for the Devils at 13:40 with Patrik Berglund picking up the assist. The assist for Berglund increased his point lead in the BRHL2 as well as adding an eighth game to his point-scoring streak.
The Devils take tomorrow off but return to action on Wednesday when they fly cross country to play the San Jose Sharks.
