Newark, NJ- Carolina Hurricanes goalie, Brian Boucher, turned away 37 out of 39 New Jersey Devils shots to lift his club to a 3-2 win Sunday morning. For the Eastern Conference leading Devils (6-1-1), it was their first loss in regulation, and Carolina moves to within one point of the Devils in the conference.
Rene Bourque started the scoring in the first period for the Canes. Bourque pass attempt across the slot hit an unsuspecting stick of David Clarkson and redirected passed a shocked Kari Lehtonen. The goal at 11:22 from Toby Petersen was the fifth on the year for Bourque.
The Devils would tie the game later in the first period. Their red-hot first line connected for yet another goal on the season. Brian Rolston would pick up his sixth of the year at 17:02. After Patrik Berglunds shot missed the net, Shane Doan fired a puck at Boucher. His shot was blocked by Ryan Shannon. The puck found its way to an open Rolston who put the biscuit in the basket with ease.
The point for Berglund, his 13th, moved him back on top of the BRHL2 scoring race.
The second period would not yield any goals for either team, but with just 39 seconds left to play, Devils defenseman Ryan Wilson was whistled for a horrible holding call.
Beginning the third period on a virtual clean sheet of ice, the Hurricane (6-2-0) power play struck. Just 35 seconds into the period, Vaclav Prospal netted his fourth of the season. Prospal snapped a shot past the hard-luck loser, Lethonen on the assist from Derick Brassard and Bourque, which put the Canes up 2-1
41 seconds later, the refs would impact the game again. This time Doan was called for interference, even though it was clear that Ryan Johnson was still possession of the puck when Doan sent him to the ice. On the ensuing power play, Sergi Kostitsyn put home a rebound of an Andy McDonald deflection of an Antti Miettinen shot and Carolina had a two-goal advantage just 1:28 into the third period.
The Devils did not go away quietly. With just over three minutes remaining, the 4th line was sent out to do some energy work, and their hard work paid off. Boyd Gordon, who is playing the wing in Mason Raymonds absence, found the back off the net to cut the Canes lead to 1. Gordon banged home a missed shot from Marcel Goc after a pretty pass from Jeff Tambellini sent Goc and Gordon on a 2-1 break. For Gordon it was his first as a Devil.
The Devils pulled Lehtonen, who stopped 46 of 48 charts on the night, with just under a minute left but never really got a good look at the net.
The Devils are scheduled to return to action later tonight as the Edmonton Oilers are to make a visit.
