Newark, NJ- When the New Jersey Devils (or Philadelphia Flyers) play, expect to spend extra time at the rink as each of their first four games have at least gone to overtime, and Sunday mornings game was no different with the Devils winning this one 3-2.
Brian Rolston scored at 2:39 of overtime on a controversial power play to improve the Devils to 3-0-1 on the season. In the overtime session, old-man, free agent-pickup for the Flyers, Teemu Selanne, was whistled by referee Unknown for holding at 1:19. It was a call that I am sure will not sit well with the Flyers management, but the Devils will take any advantage they can get. Rolstons winner, and second of the season, would be a deflection of a Valtteri Filppula shot. While covering at the point for a pinching Brent Seabrook, Filppula flipped a waist-high wrist shot towards the net that Rolston was able to deflect through Pekka Rinnes legs for the deciding marker.
The Devils had opened the scoring in the first period. Patrik Berglund, shortly after serving a roughing penalty, wristed home a missed shot from Rolston. Tom Gilbert picked up the other assist on Berglunds second of the year.
With just 1:25 remaining in the second period, the Flyers (0-0-4) tied the score courtesy of Drew Stafford. Selannes hit of Shane Doan lead to a 3-on-2 with Stafford and Eric Staal. Stafford shot made its way between Kari Lehtonens blocker and body.
Berglund netted his second of the game at 4:49 of the third period, and the Devils regained their one goal lead. After Flyers defenseman Joni Pikanen blocked consecutive shots from Rolston and Berglund, the third time was the charm as Berglund tracked down his own blocked shot and fired one into an empty net as Rinne had overplayed the first two attempts. Rookie John Carlson picked up his second point of the year on that goal with the secondary assist.
But again that lead would not hold up. The trio of Selanne, Stafford, and Staal would team up again. This time it was Selanne getting the goal at 10:51 of the third.
Tomorrow night the Devils face the New York Islanders on the island. If GM Scholl correctly submits his lines, expect John Grahame to get his first appearance in goal.
