Free Agency Options

Bryce and I have gone over some of the options put out there for free agency suggestions and we've narrowed it down.

We're trying to move away from any additional tagging, loyalty or discounts. We already have a loyalty clause, and we feel that is good enough.

The Current System we use is an open bidding system, eBay style. Bids are listed for each player, if the highest bid (average yearly contract) stands for more than 48 hours it  wins. It's simple straight-forward, and given your cap space anyone can bid on anyone. It's done to allow GMs to big on as many as 5 players at a time (while under the cap) in an attempt to fill out their roster. The downside is that people feel the process can go on to long ( I think last year the signings went on for two weeks, with most of the big signing shappening withing the first 8 days). And also, the process has lead to inflated prices.

A new Blind Bidding System would curb bidding into sections. Players would be divided into sections (Radomly or commissioner designated). GMs would only get one bid per player (persumably one per section - not likely bids would rollover to a new section). Players would sign for the highest bid (average yearly contract). Bids would be submitted e-mail, Section 1 would have a deadline, and then the winners would be announced later that day. Once Section 1 winners have been announced, a deadline for Section 2 will be announced. It is likely that the deadlines will be around 4PM EST, with the winners being announced that night around 8PM EST, and then the next section would follow those deadlines on the next day. The spacing would allow teams to know if they signed a player or not prior to the next Sections deadline. This system would be used to limit the amount of bids per team. There also is an added risk given a blind bid, GMs could end up being outbid each Section and not signing anyone. It would also limit teams with multiple needs the ability to address them. We are only comfortable with this system if everyone can agree not to complain if they end up getting outbid completely.

2009-10 salary cap set at $56.8 million ... The floor is $40.8 million

Also, Bryce and I are completely comfortable with dropping the salary floor so that rebuilding teams won't be forced to spend excessive money.  Some teams could have as much as $20million just to reach the floor.

Vote wisely.  Thank you.

How many players will be in each section?

I don't like the idea of not being able to bid on whomever we want. Doesn't seem right that a GM couldn't make offers on two or more players if they're in the same section.

Salary floor should remain. Rebuilding or not, teams should all be forced to spend the cash.

You would be able to bid on however many guys you wanted (provided you would still stay cap compliant). The difference is that you would be bidding on say 5 guys in a group, when/if you lose out. You wouldn't be jacking up the bid on another guy.

It wouldn't limit the amount of offers you can make. If you have the room to sign 10 guys and your contracts offered are under that, then great, go ahead.

Yes this, "GMs would only get one bid per section. " is misleading. As he just mentioned, you can only bid once per PLAYER in a section, but if there are 5 players you want to go after you can place a bid on all of them.

Ahhh... ok, makes sense.  Thanks, Bryce.
