Continuing the open brainstorm Bryce and I are having on the boards..
I'm kicking the tires on what, if anything, could be done to help Free Agency. Specifically, the UFA's.
First and foremost, we won't be going back to the old, original aution style. Way too much work, and I end up hating everyone of you. :)
Second. There could be some ideas that some of you have that could either work, or we could mold into something. Problem is, getting creative can create subjectity. Something we're looking to avoid in a cash league.
Another suggestion would be to drop the salary floor, or lower it significantly. Reduce over-spending by teams (like myself) just to reach the floor. Allow teams to rebuild properly, save up their money, and then when they're ready to contend, they will be ready.
We're semi open to ideas here. Feel free to share any and all.

While I do like the idea of agents acting on behalf of players, in a money league it would have to be someone who does not have any ties with any of the gms and would have to remain anonymous in order to prevent tampering.... so in this case, unfeasible...
In our money league, I don't think you're going to get away from the auction, but i wouldn't do it on the site as that was just too much of a problem.... if you wanted help running it on the boards, then i would be glad to help....
Instead of just dropping the floor, why not just eliminate it all together.... generally rebuilding teams will fill their holes with 400k AHLers so that their picks become the lowest they can get.... otherwise they'll find third or fourth line players and pay them like 1st line players....
I was in a league in the past that had a something like that. Submit your bid... 3 highest bids submitted got to make a final bid.
The biggest problem though was that was in an uncapped league.. in a league with a cap, it can be difficult to track who is staying under the cap with all of their bids.
I like the idea of a blind bidding system and Jesse's idea of the top 3 bids getting to resubmit, I think it would just have to be done in groups to avoid a team getting into cap problems

The blind bidding process works well, I would perfer one round you give it your best shot. You put the FA's in grouping of 5-10 players and the person running the FA would have to monitor cap compliance. If any bids will put a team over the cap all bids are removed for that particular round of bidding.
Winning bid is the one that gives the most total contract, (not yearly contract), that way you pay the dough you are stuck with the player. As well all UFA's come with an automatic 1 year no trade clause. A team may release the player in the first year must must payout the entire contract.
Perhaps to avoid players signing low contracts, a min. salary could be assigned to each of the players.
Also, if a team misses out on a player they want, maybe each team could have one "wildcard" bid where they could jump back into the final bidding for a player?

My two cents...

The only issue I have with this option is that you may sign a guy that you are targeting and have no interest in trading at all, but mid-season injuries leave your team with holes to fill. Then some other GM comes knocking on the door with a good offer for your team, but it includes the player you signed going his way...now what? Sure you will try and move someone else instead but if he is set on that player, your screwed!! I know what it is Derek is saying, just not sure I want every free agent that is signed this off-season to have a no-trade clause.

Are you suggesting that a 10-year contract at $2M / year would beat a 2-year contract at $9M / year?

Yep, but of course you normally have a max years... That is quite an extreme example in other leagues I have played in UFA are maxed at 3 years.
So a
1 Yr deal for 13M is less than 2 Yr deal for 7M is less than 3 Yr Deal for 4.5M
This essentually stops team from using a player for one year giving him an unrealistic salary. Most UFA contracts end up being three years and and player still end up getting close to the 1 yr deal amount but the team now has to pay this long term and may not be able to keep doing this year after year due to cap restrictions...
