1. Introduction

The BRHL Champions League is a tournament consisting of the best teams within all the BRHL leagues. It is designed to put the best teams against each other in attempt to find out who is the true champion of the BRHL.

2. Qualification

The teams that are awarded a Champions League spot are based on the previous years regular season standings and playoff results.

Breakdown:
BRHL: 7 spots allotted. Top 6 teams and the cup champion.
BRHL2: 7 spots allotted. Top 6 teams and the cup champion.
Europe: 4 spots allotted. Top 3 teams and the cup champion.
Juniors: 2 spots allotted. Top team and cup champion.

The overall league standings at the end of the regular season (minus division leader seeds) will be used as the reference of how the teams are ranked.
Tie-Breakers of the standings if points are equal are (in order of importance): wins, goals for, fewest regulation losses, goals against.

If the cup champion of the respective league is within the qualification bracket of the leagues top teams, then the qualification extends to the next highest ranked team.

Examples:
- If the BRHL Cup champion finishes in the spots #1-6 of the final regular season, then the #7 team earns a qualification spot.
- If the BRHL Cup champion finishes in the spots #7 or lower, then the qualification spots are given to the #1-6 spots.

The winner of the BRHL Champions League will automatically qualify for next years tournament. The league of the winner will then receive one less qualification spot. The cup champion and the #1-5 spots of the league will then qualify.

3. Roster / Team Regulations

The teams that have qualified for the Champions League will be accurately duplicated and modified throughout the season.
At the time of the Champions League games the state of the teams in the BRHL, BRHL2, European and Junior league will be duplicated from the previous season. Meaning the teams that qualified will play through the Champions League with the identical teams they finished those seasons with.
Despite the accuracy of the rosters from their respective leagues, the lineups and the overall management of the team will be separate. Demotions and promotions from pro or minor league teams will be treated separately in the Champions League.

Since these rosters are designed to be a copy of their original teams, no trades or movement of players between teams in the Champions League will be allowed. There are no trades or waivers in this league.
BRHL Roster and Line regulations apply.

4. Format

Group Stage:
The teams that earn qualifications will be given rankings of 1-5. One of each ranking will be in each group. With the rankings, teams will be drawn to fill out the groups.

Rankings:
#1 BRHL and BRHL2 Cup Champions and teams with the highest point total in each BRHL and BRHL2.*
#2 2ND and 3RD highest point total teams in the BRHL and BRHL2.
#3 4TH and 5TH highest point total teams in the BRHL and BRHL2.
#4 6TH highest point total team in the BRHL and BRHL2. European Cup Champion and European team with the highest point total.*
#5 3RD and 4TH highest point total European teams. Juniors Cup Champion and 2ND ranked team.

* - If the cup champion also earns the most point in their league, then the ranking will go to the team below them.

Each team will play each team in the group twice, home and away. At the end of group play, the top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout rounds. In addition to the top two teams in each group, the two 3RD ranked teams will also advance.

Points awarded in the group stage are: 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss.

All of the teams that advance to the knockout rounds will be placed into one pool and will be drawn against each other randomly. After each stage of the knockout rounds, the advancing teams will be randomly drawn for their next opponent. The opening two rounds of the knockout rounds will be a best-of-five format. The last two will be the best-of-seven format.

5. Schedule

The scheduling of these games will not affect any other league or team within the BRHL. Depending on when the games for the Champions League are played, teams could be in action on the same night in different leagues.
The actual timing of the Champions League is still being considered, but it for certain will not start until 2010.

6. Prize Money

1st place: $4,000,000
2nd place: $2,000,000

Submission of lines by GM: $100,000

Participation is needed to receive prizes.

7. In the event of

The following are a list of possibilities and what would happen, should they occur.

- Injuries in Champions League games: Will not affect the actual team.
- A person is a GM of more than one team: GMs will be allowed to run as many teams as they have.

8. Other

If participation is not made by the respective GMs, then the league will continue and the teams will then have their roster and line automatically taken care of by the STHS program.

Competition might appear to favor the BRHL and BRHL2 teams, but since they are generally supposed to be favored anyways the underdogs will play a pivotal role in picking up points.

==========================================================

The Champions League has been something Ive wanted to do for a while, and now with the amount of leagues in the BRHL it makes sense. The basis of these rules and format are based on the UEFA Champions League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League).

If for some reason, participation or activity isnt up to par by the GMs then the league will still happen. I will run it myself, if need be.

If you have any questions comments or suggestions feel free to post:
