Indisciplined Play sees St Louis eliminated

After winning Games 4 and 5 to hold off elimination, the Blues took needless penalties and saw themselves eliminated after a 4-1 loss at home. Though St Louis can take a positive view upon their season. After finishing two points out of a playoff spot last year, they managed to finish 5th in the conference, improving by almost 20 points from last year. After finishing the regular season on a three game winning streak, they continued their hot play sweeping the Wild in 4 games. However, lack of scoring became a huge problem for the Blues in the first three games. Going 0 for 15 on the powerplay saw the Blues only score 3 games throughout the first three games. Games 2 was the turning point of the series as St Louis dominated the first two periods before losing the game in a three minute gap in the third with just 5 shots in the period.

In Game 6, St Louis had the chance to take an early powerplay after Patrick Sharp cross-checked Eric Staal. However, Staal retaliated against Sharp with an undisciplined roughing penalty creating a 4 on 4 situation. Although they did not concede then, Brendan Morrow scored just over 8 minutes in. Then Joseph Corvo took a penalty just under 6 minutes later which Patrick Marleau capitalized upon 3 seconds later. Micheal Peca got St Louis back into the game 11 seconds later, but that's the closest the Blues came. With just over a minute left in the second, Horcoff gave the Avalanche breathing room before adding his 2nd of the game in the third on a powerplay. Though outshooting the Avs 22-18 in the last two periods, they could not beat the goaltending ability of Christobel Huet who returned to his superhuman form.

Colorado go on to face Chicago in the Conference finals while St Louis now clear out their lockers to face the future. Paul Kariya, Brian Rolston, Hal Gill, Micheal Peca, Andrew Brunette and Sergei Zubov all now face the UFA market though GM Gareth Evans has talked with two outgoing UFAs indicating that they are prime targets for the team in the UFA market.
