The Detroit Red Wings have been a thorn in the side of the St Louis Blues, winning 3 of 4 match ups between the two teams and tying in the other. Finally the Blues were able to defeat their divisional rival and it came at the right time. With Calgary beating Minnesota in the earlier game, the pressure on the Blues was high.
They got right to work on an early powerplay, as Andrew Ference was in the box for elbowing, Paul Kariya and Brian Rolston set up Mike Fisher for his 25th of the season. However, former Blue Nik Antropov tied the game up 10 minutes later. In the second, the Blues struggled to pull away from the 8th place Wings. Ladislav Smid scored his 5th of the year but Ference made up for his penalty by drawing the game level once again.
In the third, it was the Evgeni Nabokov show as he stopped all 12 shots he faced in the period giving the Blues a chance to win and they took it. Hal Gill's 4th of the season and 1st with the Blues turned out to be the eventual game winner while Tom Poti's 9th of the year added insurance.
"Glad to get that win in the bag, pulls us closer to teams like Dallas and Minnesota while separating us from the perilious 7th and 8th place spots. We've set ourselves goals this season, our first was to get into the playoffs, now we believe we could even climb to 4th or 5th place this season."
